Hey guys I posted here about an editing laptop but $$ is tight now and that would run me about 2grand. So I think I hav to cave. Some of u suggested a desktop which would be considerably less $. Looking for HD (hmc150) editing ability but editing dvx footage presently. Can u guys point me in the right direction as I'm not 2 versed as to where the deals are. What's a good machine for a good price. Thanks

Darren

You'll have to be more specific on your budget I think....nobody here is a used car salesman, so don't be scared to let us know what you have to spend.

lol...used car salesman....well i'm lookin on maybe $1000 maybe i bit more but i duno how realistic that is. I'm talking For a tower. i can prolly just buy a monitor here in jamaica. (customs iz a biatch)

I was hard pressed to find something within your price range that I think has the ability to grow....I'm sure alot more folks could find something better/cheaper, but personally for a fully put together new system I like newegg....if you wanted to go quite a bit cheaper you could buy used or new on Ebay and use the general specs of this system as a guide.

One thing I will say is that no matter what you'll need to get a couple more HD's installed, and you also still need to purchase an editing suite.

seems u have misunderstood me...i dont need a hardrive. i'm looking for an desktop capable of hi def editing (hmc150) for a reasonable price as $2000 for the laptop i wanted is 2 much now. But i have a dvx at the moment.

I appreciate ur effort none the less.

Nick's link would work for you. Granted, you could save a little bit of money if you built it yourself, but then you wouldn't have a nice three-year warranty. That CyberPower system also has an 800w power supply. It's from "Ultra" which isn't the best PSU manufacturer, but should be okay. That amount of power would still allow you to add some more hard drives or a more powerful graphics card later.

Your budget is about $1000, but does that include a monitor?

I edit HVX DVCPROHD footage on a 4 year-old laptop and external USB drive (using Vegas). It's not optimal, but works fine.

My main editing PC is a couple years old now, but works great -- I don't see myself upgrading for the next year or two anyway. It's a 2.8 GHz 4-core with 4 gigs of RAM running XP. Even with two monitors it cost well under $1000.

The point is you don't need the latest-and-greatest for editing video anymore, unless you're editing uncompressed HD.

I also edit DVCPROHD on an older laptop, and it works out fine. We do have to take into account that he's working with HMC150 footage which requires some horsepower to edit.

I'm sure a home built or a used system would be exactly what I would purchase, but not everyone has the time, experience, or skills to deal with such.....so I tend to like to point people at new items in a situation like this.
