Editing Desk

that could work. Won't be quite as ergonomic, but a viable solution if you didn't want to go the DIY route. You could probably even build a monitor shelf for it if you wanted...

Man PDX, you really want me to build something don't ya!

That's a great idea, I'll probably do that.

you should look through the markertek.com catalog. i nhte back there are lots of desks. companies like omnirax, mulitdesk, middle atlantic products. range: $300-$2k

i think an adustable keyboard tray is pretty key, too. spend $$$ on that, if you need it. probably more important that that fits to YOU more than the desk itself.

Don't encourage him to buy something pre fab. He needs to BUILD BUILD BUILD! Rome wasn't built in a day and neither should your edit desk! Just kidding. I would deffinetly buy a pre fab desk if I had the $$

I must be missing something... $2-4k for a DESK? I'll find hundreds of ways to spend that money before I consider shelling it out for a desk... This was like $200 and I don't really feel the need for anything better, yet.

Mine was free.

Well, there was some labor involved. Had to pull it out of the dumpster, wrangle it into the convertible, carry it up two flights of stairs (it's steel), and fit it through the doorway of "my" room.

And it's ugly.

I went with this from Staples. Big enough to handle most of my equipment and cheap at 80 bucks.

Standing up the whole time would probably kill me, as much time as I spend on the computer. But I do find that when you're in a groove, it's nice to be able to kick the chair back and engage the material from a standing position. Just something psychologically satisfying about getting up and dancing with the images. And there's no denying the benefit your body gets from not sitting on the bootay all day. I tried it out the last time I rearranged the gear, and so far, I dig it.

Yeah, when I'm laying down those boring talking head shots I sometimes feel like standing up and dancing.... not. :)

btw, Matulis, I dig your sig.

grathias, mang.
And as a back-atcha, I have (on more than one occasion) found myself tapping along with the cowbell!

I've used those desks as well as other I like better (but they're still a couple of grand). The only reason to go with a real editing desk (I used them for midi composition/recording/mixing) is that they are designed with racks built in. If you don't use rack mounted gear then it's a waste of money. If you do use rack mounted gear, they are awfully nice to have.

That said, you can still build your own and buy the hardware for building in your own 19" rack mounts.
