Editing D90 footage in FCP, quick question(s)

Total novice here. This is my first project on the D90 and my first ever time using FCP. At my college they have Macs with FCP Version 6.0 . I was importing some video footage from the D90 today just to test it out before I start.

When I pick the squence and choose my options here's what i'm using ;

Frame Size : 1280 x 720 , but then my ascept ratio has to be 16:9 HD. That's right though, correct? So I pick 16:9 HD
Pixel Aspect Ratio - Square
Field Dominance - ?
Editing Timebase - 24fps
Quicktime Video Settings ; Compressor - Apple ProRes 422 HQ
Quality 1-100 - 100
Then I'm picking advanced to be able to change the FPS to 24.

Is this what works best for d90 footage in FCP ? It's what I've had my best results with so far. I'm just checking.

The footage in FCP has a red line on the top of the timeline and i'm unable to view my footage unless I render it first. Do I have to do this or am I missing something? I obviously want to keep the video the best quality I can. Whatever steps I have to do to keep my footage looking the best I will do.

Once I'm all done editing, is their a special file format to make the video for exporting or whatever? Plus I want to do that Lee Wilson stair-stepping removal before I finish too.

Thanks for any help.

That what I use, and it works fine for me, although I only get an orange bar. Maybe your render qualities settings are too aggressive... Try changing dynamic RT from "Safe" to "Unlimited"

Also: there's a plugin effect for the the stair-step removal that you can just drop to each individual clip. I found it in that massive thread stickied at the top of the forum.

D90 Rescaler does it perfectly

D90 Rescaler does it perfectly

The D90 Rescaler plugin from Matthias is an instant fix to the jaggies on any diagonal line in a frame of D90 footage. Add it to your clip and render. That's all there is to it.

Here's a link to a blog post showing the filter in action. It has links to clips on vimeo that you can download and view in full resolution.

As for the FCP sequence settings, I transcode the .avi files from the D90 to Apple RS422 files before editing. If you're going to render to RS422 in the end (as you've defined in your FCP options) then I find it beneficial to transcode your clips before editing. Check my blog for details.

When you drag the first clip on your FCP timeline it asks if you want to change the timeline to match the clip. Click yes and you're done. Older versions of FCP may not have this function. If you need to set it up manually, the settings you provided is correct.

Okay, I guess I'm not allowed to use the IMacs at my school with FCP 6. No clue why. They told me I can only use a G4 Mac with FCP version 1.0 or whatever. Anytime I try to change any of the settings, the timeline goes away and I am unable to use it. It's grey on the menu and the command 3 shortcut key won't work either. I try to play the video just in the window without changing the sequence and it's skipping and glitching cause the computer is so dang old and worthless. I'm basically screwed I take it ? Has anybody ever edited d90 footage or FCP Version 4 or whatever or lower or a g5-g4 mac ?

I am trying to figure a way to steal a computer with FCP 6 or higher. I won't let them stop me from making my movies.

Yes, I am editing on version 4.5 HD. I think you need an HD version for it to work? I transcode to the Apple Intermediate codec using MPEG Streamclip or just throw the AVI files right on to a timeline set to apple intermediate. It's a little sluggish on a dual 2.7 G5, but I can still edit in realtime. Editing without the rescaler on works faster.

When you timeline closes, just double click it again from the clips window. (Usually called Sequence 1)
