Editing computer for HVX200

problem is: right now we would all have to choose between AVID or FCP.....and both are not my favourite choices.....:(
they will all charge us for that codec.
Is it not available@no-charge the Avid DNxHD 10bit codec?

Jim, that's good to know. I guess building your own you saves money, while buying a pre-approved system you have more of a support system.

Chuck, monitoring HD is a big concern for me too. An Sd downconvert isn't good enough for me, and I don't want to spring for a 1200A deck to view the footage so...:(

Maybe by the time, I'm going to buy there'll be a solution.

Cheers.

I took a look at the recommended specs for Avid Xpress HD this evening and I don't see anything that raised a warning flag... they tend to recommend dual Xeons, and later models with faster bus speeds, but this seems to be centered around doing external storage with LANshare. A pentium D based system should work just fine. The recommended video cards are a notch or two above the bottom of the barrel, but that's about it. I remember reading somewhere that some of their effects such as advanced titling make use of OpenGL and later model video cards.

There's no question the value of having a comfort level with your system, and buying something on their approved list will eliminate one level of the "blame game" when trouble shooting. Having said that, I personally wouldn't hesitate to build my own system if I went Avid. And Avid is on my consideration list if I don't like what I see in regards to P2 support from Sony Vegas come NAB...

And for Cineform's Prospect HD* ? [1]

Is it better than the Avid 10 bit codec? [1A]

What will it be the best PC solution? [@ price range?] [1B]

And for uncompressed HD with a price range more than $4,000, of course, but as less expensive as possible ?... [2]

* A better codec (for post-production) than DVCPRO HD (only for shooting), as seems to be for film-out (35mm), and available with P2 support, for sure!
