editing between Avid projects

Given that you can only have one Avid project open at a time (plus I re-name my OMFI folder for each project separately), any recommendations for cutting together different projects in one timeline (like for a reel)?

Only thing I can think of now is to just open each one and export the desired bits as AVIs or QuickTime animations or something, then bring each such exported clip into the same timeline.

If you rename the OMFI folder then exporting and importing is your best bet. If you kept one OMFI folder then you could use the Open Bin command from the File menu and browse to a Bin in the project you want, open it, and edit away.

Why? Avid's media tool is one of it's strong suits. Learn to manage your media using the media tool, you'll be glad you spent the time.

Well...probably still have a few things to learn about Media Management, but the biggest project I worked on resulted in a project that could not be consolidated (invalid trim)--something I've never been able to fix. And so to be safe, I re-name the OMFI folders. I thought it was pretty common practice.

You can open bins from other projects within Avid.
I've used this to bring together projects before.

I'm not in front of one now, but I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

Thanks guys. Mattrogers, I believe that's the method krestofre mentions...but it won't work if I re-name the OMFI file for each project.

Read about virtual drives

If you're on a windows system, you should go to the Avid forums and do a search for "subst" or "virtual drives". I've used them and they're great. They work like this:

In your OMFI MediaFile folder you can make seperate folders, named for each project. Say one folder called Project1, another called Project2, then Project3...you get the idea. Then you open Notepad or Wordpad and type out a simple little file that tells your Windows system to recognize each seperate folder as a "drive". For example, you can tell it to make the Project1 folder your M drive, your Project2 folder your N drive, Project3 folder your O drive, etc... Search the Avid forums for "subst" for what to type, how to make it an executable, and how to make it run everytime you log on to Windows.

After you make your virtual drive file...

When you open Avid, go to your Media Creation settings and make sure "Filter based on Resolution" is turned off. Now, when you open Project1, you can capture/render/import files to the M drive. It'll actually go to the Project1 folder, but your Avid now thinks it's drive M. When you need to back your project up you just copy the folder--no need to go to Media Manager at all!

I suggest looking into it. They're great, easy to use, and make media management great. Just make sure you're aware when you're capturing, importing media, or rendering.

Hope this helps you. It helped me.

Michael.

I usually go to File and choose open bin from the drop down menu.
Then choose a project folder from the popup window and in the project folder select the bin (.avb file) that I need. It will open up within the current project. If I need to save it I'll duplicate the bin contents and save to a new bin.

Hope that helps

I just open the bin the other sequences are in and either copy/paste into one new sequence or throw a sequnce into the source monitor and edit from it.
