Editing bay set up?

Hi everyone,

I posted this in the other forum but didn't really get much out of it. Anyway, I'm setting up an editing bay for my company. I need your help on suggesting products specifics.

1. What is the best editing desktop for MAC or the next best thing?

2. What monitors should I get? - I'll be editing SD and HD. How do they do the two seperate monitors in FCP without a DV deck?

3. What RAM speed should I get? you think 4gig is good or more? - I'll be doing AE too!

Appreciate all your help!

What's your budget?

The fastest one you can afford (although stick w/the ATi GFX cards)

Computer monitors or external/b'cast monitors and what is your budget?

4 is as low as I'd go and I think 2gigs per core is what's recommended to get the most of the system.

for a color accurate monitoring solution, check out the matrox mxo with 23" apple display. that is, unless you have budget for something nicer...

you didn't mention monitors for audio. if you need some, check out the krk rokit 5's. great sounding monitors for $300/pair.

I have a budget of $4-5k for the whole system. I'm thinking actually of setting up 2 editing bays.

I read somewhere that I would need this (DeckLink HD Pro Single Link) is it really necessary?

Yeah actually I'll be needing those too! do you need an amp for those speakers or they just plug in straight to the computer? or do I need an AMP so that it'll sound much better?

they are self powered and can be connected straight from the computer if you like. they have rca, 1/4", and xlr inputs so straight from the mac requires a 1/8" stereo mini plug to dual rca cable. you can find these speakers at your local guitar center if you want to listen to them. coming from an audio background myself, i can tell you that bang for buck, they can't be beat. at my old studio i had them next to a pair of $5000 dynaudio's and they held their own.....

$4-5k for the whole thing isn't very much money to work with. Does that budget have to cover software and additional storage as well? What kind of HD are you going to be working with? If you need HD/SDI and/or analog I/O you'll need something like the Decklink card. If you want to view your HD footage on an external/b'cast monitor you'll need either a card like the Decklink, the Blackmagic Intensity / Intentisy Pro, or the Matrox MXO 1 or 2. The best bang for your buck, in terms of monitoring, is to grab the MXO 1 and a 23" Apple Cinema Display.

The budget of 4-5k is only for equipment we already have attained softwares. And yes, we are going to be working with HD - DVCPRO50/DVCPRO - (Panasonic P2 camera). I would like to see it in a broadcast monitor while editing and for color correction. How much would you say we have to spend to have this kind of set up?

-> I

an actual 1080p broadcast monitor will cost around $3500 (plus the cost of a card to get the signal to the monitor).... The MXO/Apple ACD solution which is supposed to be very good costs about $2000.

What else can you recommend on sound monitors? around the same price as these krk rokit 5's?

seems like they've discontinued the sale of this already.

appreciate it!

So... the following is all I need to have a professional standard editing bay?

MACpro
- 2.8gHz quad core intel xeon
6 gig RAM
500g SATA Hard Drive
16x dual layer superdrive
nVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT 512mb graphics

MXO w/ 23" apple cinema HD display (for broadcast monitor and preview of SDI/HD content)
HP - 19" widescreen LCD W1907 (for computer monitor) - can you recommend any other?

Monitor speakers (rokits)

anything else?

audio mixer to control the sound coming out of the MXO and going into the speakers

pick up a couple more SATA hard drives from newegg.com for media drives. 1tb Samsung's are $149 right now... i may pick up a few more.
