Editing AVCAM in FCP 7 sluggish

Hello,

I've just upgraded to FCP 7 to handle the footage from my AF-100. Log and Transfer works great, the clips show up and look great. But once I start editing, adding a few tracks, or effects i start getting slowdown, skipping and frozen frames. I've tried switching from Safe RT and Unlimited RT still no difference. Help?

Should i be using specific Sequence Presets?

Anyone have any tricks they're are using to edit these files?

I'm running an iMac w/ 2.8 Ghz intel core 2 Duo, 4GB of Memory. 2TB HD, plus external drives.

Definitely need to transcode to ProRes for editing.

You don't want to edit in the native avc as it is a long gop codec and will cause you issues every time in FCP.

On the other hand i've heard that iMovie will edit it just fine in its native state.
Can't say for sure I don't use iMovie.

FCPX's render engine will fix this problem although ProRes or any other non long gop codec will remedy what ales you at the moment.

If you use mp3 music files in your sequence this as well will cause similar issues.

Thanks Jmark and Benniles,

You solved two of my problems.

I didn't use ProRes 422 (i used HDV) and i'm working with an mp3
...will try it with an AIFF or WAV.

Also, should i use ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (HQ) ?

Cheers
PDX
