Editing a beauty pageant event.

Recently just shot a cosmetic beauty pageant event... Well it's not a very big stuff. They held it in a small area in a shopping complex.

I would like to hear some feedbacks on how you guys would tell the story of this event. It's a bit imperfect though....

The setup was like this :
I covered the event solely alone on a single DVX. There was actually another guy covering for live feed, but he is under different company so we will edit it separately. So I was told to cover the event as though I'm alone.

I shot the event mostly by the side on tripod. Not on the dead center as I was occupied by the live feed guy. I was on that position for 80% of the time. and I went to different areas to cover off tripod. So I wasn't rolling my cameras all the time. Total footage is around 2.5 hours. Event lasted 2 hours. My footage included make up sessions which was around 3 hours. so total time I shot is 5 hours.

I'm quite new to these events... so would like to know your feedbacks on how you would edit or how u give your end product. Whether :

- remove bad shots and give the full remaining one ?
- what is the best length for this kind of event ? (it's not stated by the organizer on how should I give )
- Should I cut to 30 mins ?

Thanks a lot for your tips and pointers...

You can get a ton of opinions but you should first discuss it with the organizer/client.

What's the purpose of this video? Show the women? Tell the story of the event?

The footage might be 2.5 hours but much of it may not cut it as "interesting to watch".
I would keep it under 5 minutes and it might be too much.

Purpose of the video ? I was paid to cover the events... but not stated explicitly what to cover and what kind of end results to give... that's the problem.

So I think now it's up to me as I think the client is not so sure of what he wants. As you can see from the way of putting up to videographers and editing separately.

Perhaps I think this video might end up in the hands of the contestants too.. so i think it's necessary to include every contestant's proceeding in it.

Ask your client what they want (its normally a good idea to do this before production starts so you knwo how to shoot .. and what to charge!).
