Hello Everybody,

I just came back from Leh Ladakh region in northern part of India. I shopt on 16:9 to get the best of landscape and culture. Now I come back and start editing in Premier Pro 1.5.

I am getting no idea how to handel 16:9 footage. After caputre is shows a small footage in the middle of black box. If i stretch it, becomes bloor. It seems that the whole project is gone and regreting that I should shot on 4:3 normal.

Can anybody help me and give me the solution how to edit it and do i need a special hardware to capture and edit it.

Thanks

Vivek

Well, you don't need special hardware at all. And, I always shoot 16:9 man. Is there another way? :)

Make sure that you have the correct aspect ratio selected in your project settings when you start up. If not, start a new project and select either NTSC or PAL widescreen (and probably 48kHz, but that's up to you).

I'm betting your project settings are incorrect somehow.

Thank you very much for your advise, it gives me some relief when you said is there any way other than 16:9. Thanks...
I've selected everything as you said earlier but the captured clippings doesn't filled up the full screen like 4:3. it remained in the center and keep black empty space around.
It also takes little much time in render than 4:3. Is it how it behaves or we are still doing something silly.

If i may ask, on what software do you use for editing. Thanks for your support. Cheers

Vivek, are you sure you shot using "squeeze" mode? Is it possible you shot using letterbox mode? Select a clip in the project window and see what it's aspect ratio is. If it says 0.9 then you most likely shot letterbox and you should edit in a 4x3 project. Try opening a few clips in a 4x3 project and see how it looks.

Kevin, you are right. I didn't use Squeeze mode, i shot in Letter Box mode and my camera is DVX102B. Do you still think, I should edit it in 4:3 project. Thanks for your advise.

As Msconce said...edit in a 4x3 project.
If your final delivery will be a widescreen television, edit in a widescreen preset, and increase the scale of the clips until the footage fills the screen. This is very similiar to the squeeze mode on the camera.

In the future, I personally would shoot 4x3, but preserve the 16x9 framing. Then you can uprez if you want widescreen, letterbox if you want that, or 4x3 if you want that. Many more options for you to play with.

Don't you lose quality though if you uprez 4x3 to 16x9, as opposed to just shooting in 'squeeze' mode?

That's debatable. In "Squeeze" the camera is dooign the same uprex you would do in post. - The question is which (post or the camera) has a better quality uprez. It's widly acecpted that it's better to uprez in post than in the DVX.

Ah, I see... thanks, that's good to know. For the HVX (which is what I primarily use) it's a different story though isn't it? The HVX is natively 16x9, if I'm not mistaken...

Thanks

Thanks
