Edit Raw Footage Files CS3 or CS4?

Hey all --

Quick question:

I'm done with a project, and I just want to save the raw footage that matches my project file in PP CS4.

Basically, I don't want all the un-used footage wasting space in my hard drive, but I'd like to keep the raw footage that is used in the finished product so I can create exports whenever I want from the originals.

Lets say Clip 001 is 45 seconds in length. I created an edit that was 10 seconds of that clip and placed it in my project. I'd like to delete the other 35 seconds of that clip that I didn't use... and do so for the rest of the clips in the project.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

No, because those clip exists as separate video files and Premiere is doing non-destructive edit, meaning that the original files aren't impacted in anyway.

Hehe yeah, I know that... my question was if there is any way to get PP to do it, not how PP handles editing by default.

The way Premiere handles the footage is crucial to understanding why you can't do it. You're trying to modify the very same file that you're editing. It's like if you're walking along and somebody pulls the floor out from under you. The only way is if you manually render out every single clip and reimport it back into the project.

TWJP, take a look at Project Manager. You find it under Project > Project Manager. How to use it and how it works, its all in the help file.

Depending of the type of your footage it works exactly as you want it to.

Roger,

Thanks so much... that seems to be exactly what I needed! Only problem is the damn thing seems to freeze right at the end of its process (I think all it needs to do is save the trimmed project, because a glance at the number and overall size of the video clips it creates is right on track with how big the project should be), and its at 90% as far as the yellow progress bar shows.

Trying to troubleshoot it now...

I would recomend using the setting that says something like "save 2 seconds of footage past the edit point" "or "include handles" (sorry , don't recall the words exactly) but set it to save about 2-3 seconds before and after the edit point.
This will allow you to keep just the important stuff (and cut the progect size) but still allow you to do some fine tweaking later if you need to.

Yeah, the term they use is 'handles' (by frames).

Still haven't gotten it to work... but I'm trying.

EDIT:

I figured out what the problem was... when opening the project in PP, after all the clips had loaded... I'd get an error message saying "file importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure... reading and writing the this file's metadata (xmp) has been disabled"... this was for 2 audio clips (.wavs)

I tried deleting the those two files, and Project Manager successfully ported over my trimmed project. It's too bad though, cause those two audio clips were fairly important... but I can reinsert them into the trimmed project later. Worth saving all the HDD space.

Thanks again, Roger... that was a big help!
