Edit footage on card before copy to HD?

I'm out for 3 weeks shooting Vortex2 and will be offloading an SDHC card every day to a portable hard drive. Some of the shots on the card need to be deleted. Is there a way to delete the shots on the card before I copy over the entire directory structure to the hard drive (without using the camera)? I don't see this option in the Panny AVCCAM viewer program?

Perhaps when I'm in FCP and doing a Log and Transfer (transcode) I can delete the clips then.

I don't want to mess up the directory structure of the card as I think this may be bad if I have re-log and transfer (transcode) from the copy of the card on my hard drive at a later stage???

Aren't you going to have to watch the clips to know what to delete? If so, copy them to your computer, and then delete the unwanted clips.

I can watch the clips on my mac using the VLC play fine (actually VLC plays video back better than the panny app) but I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to keep the file structure intact on the SD card (in my case the copy on my HD) and you can't just delete a mts file from the card.

I should run a few tests perhaps.

You shouldn't delete the files off the card in any way other than with your camera. Yes, the files can technically be deleted using a computer. But when you put the card back into the camera, you're going to see placeholders for all those deleted files, and the camera will think the files are still there. So you'll still have to delete the placeholders via the camera. You save nothing, and actually add a step (and time) to the process of getting rid of unwanted files.

If you're in a hurry during the shoot, offload all the files to the computer, put the card back into the camera, and format it. If you've got free time, just copy the files you want to the computer, then format the card in the camera. At least, that was my experience.
