Edelkrone pocket rig competitors?

I’m starting to build a run and gun kit. I primarily direct narrative but want to do more no-budget no/micro-crew doc and experimental work, perhaps a little videography on the side to supplement income.

I’m looking to build something around a gh4/g80.

Compactness (I live in a city where traveling my bike or by foot makes the most sense), weight, simplicity and versatility are key.

I was initially planning to do everything on a monopod, but not being able to place camera safely is a bit of a problem, so I’ve conceded I probably need a tripod.

In addition I want to have a shoulder rig or monopod for more movement - i don’t like how gimbal shots look. The edelkrone pocket rig seems to combine elements of both. I also love how tiny it packs down.

It does have some lukewarm reviews though, and is now been out quite a while.

Are there any alternatives to it that fill a similar niche?

Yeah go for that Monfrotto style Monpod, it really is a great way to get fluidity into live action shooting. You aren't really going to be able to literally walk and shoot very well, but how often do you actually do that?

Or one thing I've heard people do is put a heavy duty gorillapod on your shoulder with your gh4 on it. Since you're going cheap. I bet you could get some decent results for that reality doc feeling. Whatever you do, have a solution for transferring from your monopod or rig to a tripod, so you can rest it there.

Perhaps, I like to be able to move quickly, being on a shoulder is quicker than moving a monopod (if even only slightly). Re: how often I move in shot - if I'm doing live stuff, it's great to actually be free to use my feet.

Perhaps a more traditional rig and a tripod are a better way to go. Unsure.

I bought the Manfrotto Befree with little fluid head....one leg unscrews as a monopod....the tripod is not production quality, but if you're the only one using it, it can do the job for you....I own a big monopod and it stays home now...my slider goes on my big tripods, but when I want to travel light I take this little 16 1/2 inch tripod with me and my Miller stays home lol...it gets terrible reviews, but it has one massive advantage over a monopod, at least for me and that is when I'm in crappy dirty dusty conditions, it stands up by itself...and I can change lenses on it and if you're patient you can even get a "reasonable" panshot with either of the cameras you mentioned....the tilt is unusable....just google it....it will come up at B&H....again I will emphasize...I am the only person ever using it....on my 2nd year with it and it's great for travel purposes...

That manfrotto sounds like a good rig... Something like that, that could take a fluid head might be ideal... Though I guess a monopod with a fluid head would be too top heavy.

In the end there was a good deal on a secondhand Pocket Rig on ebay, so I've grabbed it to give it a go. Should be able to sell it on at the same price if it doens't seem suitable.
