Edelkrone or Westside AV EVF holder

I use the Edelkrone - it's superbly well made and works perfectly. You can adjust the tension so it will take different weights and sizes, plus you don't have to tighten or loosen it to move the evf; it just behaves like it's part of the rig.

I like the look of endelkrones too. It's the big silver screw on the other that shouts budget and its $30 more expensive. Endelkrone is doing free delivery too at the moment.

I'm looking into one of there rigs

The Edelkrone looks pretty nice. I have the Westside AV EVF holder and it works but the Edelkrone looks higher end with more adjustment and attachment options. I would like to try one out and compare it to the Westside AV version.
I haven't been all that happy with second party EVF solutions lately and have been using a DP6 most of the time with a Fig Rig for handheld instead of trying to get the camera on my shoulder.

I really like the look of the Edelkrone. I am thinking of getting it for my personal rig because I work we use a friction arm and a DP6 and it works nice, but doesn't have the quick adjustability I want. My only worry is that with the Tilta shoulder pad, I wouldn't be able to get a DP4 or Alphatron far enough away from where the cold-shoe is.

What haven't you been too happy with, with current EVF solutions? If I recall correctly you had a DP4 and I remember you saying it was a great match for the AF100?

I use both Westside AV's & Edelkrone's holders for Alphatron & Zacuto EVFs.

Originally got the Edelkrone for use on the 5D3 & GH, but recently being using it on the AF100 too. It's well made, easy to use with one hand, & the tension can be adjusted for different setups.

Westside's wins out when compactness is more important. Not only is it easier to cram into an overstuffed case, but the mount is lower profile, so better inside cars, telepromters, & such.

Everything breaks so I always carry backup, & will continue relying on both holders.

DP4 is a nice monitor and EVF but since I purchased the DP6 I hardly use it. The last few handheld shoots I striped the AF-100 down and only used the viewfinder and push to focus with the two new Lumix zooms. Image stabilization is so good with the 12-35 and 35-100 I was able to palm the camera much better than when I was using heavier non IS lenses. Add in a Fig Rig for walking shots and I'm set.
When I shoot on a tripod I pull out the DP6 and mount it on the top handles 1/4 20 or use a Noga arm. It's really amazing how those two lenses changed the way I use the AF-100. It's really a different camera now.

^ That's a thing of beauty. I saw it at NAB and was impressed with it. How do you mount it to your AF-100? Any pics?

Hey Erik, I dont have an AF 100 :) but was just giving feedback on the EVF holder. I use it with my 7d rig (and upcoming blackmagic camera) and I use it with the 15mm rod attachment. Here's the rig without the camera. http://www.bmcuser.com/showthread.php?2008-Solid-Camera-EVF-mount (the dust thing i mentioned isnt an issue as im assured by the manufacturers). I got SO sick of noga arms that I had to get something of quality like this which will be with me on whatever rig i have in the future. Since that post on Bmcuser i have used it on a documentary really run and gun and it performed excellently.

Wow the solid camera arm looks sweet, but so expensive. I just wish cameras came with EVFs and LCDs that were really good, then we wouldn't have to worry about all these arms.

I have the Edelkrone, and have liked it much more than a Noga arm. However, after about 6 months of use, mine went bad. They immediately sent me a replacement free of charge, which was nice. But after getting the new one, I realized how to adjust the tension on the old one, and that seemed to fix the issue for the most part. It's still a bit finicky, and I noticed that the main problem with the system is going from hot to cold temperatures. In the cold the metal contracts, so it loses friction and you have to adjust the tension to make it tighter. Then when it warms up (if you go inside for example) the metal expands again and then it's too tight. And I worry about the stress that is being put on the cold shoe on the AF100. It feels like after a while that might actually break off if you're not careful. All that said, I still like it better than a Noga arm.

i have edelkrone evf, got it with modula 7. i sold the modula almost right away.... did not like it at all, but i left the EVF - its perfect tool, i highly recommend it!

I have the edelkrone too - nicely made & much nicer to use than a noga arm, but when using the AF101 handheld - I want to use it with small hd dp4 as an evf on a rig on my shoulder.

Problem being I cant get the rig balanced - the edelkrone needs a shoe mount and the 2 on the AF101 (on the handle & under the handle) are not in a great place - with the evf to my eye, the camera & lens are so far forward that my arms take all the wait. Ideally I would like my shoulder to take the majority of the weight. At the moment I am using an additional shoe mount extender on the cameras shoe mount to push the edelkrone further forward, but I am fearful of the torque that is putting on the cameras shoe mount

Has anyone found a solution to this? From my convoluted explaination does anyone even know what the hell I'm talking about?

The problem with most of these accessories is that they are designed to be universal - that's a plus from the manufacturing POV, but not so good in daily use. Almost anyone who has been doing this for a while has accumulated bits and pieces like rod blocks, 15mm rods, etc. With 2" angle aluminum, available from almost any hardware store, you can use simple hand tools like a drill, hacksaw, files and taps to use these pieces to fabricate something much better, custom fit to the AF100.

The one I made is solid, doesn't add height (so it fits in a case without disassembly), moves far enough forward over the matte box for balanced handholding, and, by sliding it back on the rods, will tip up to clear the matte box for tripod shooting. It's not rocket science.

And if you don't have the pieces, google 15mm rods and see the inexpensive stuff that's available (I wouldn't use these for a matte box, bvecause they're cheaply made, but they're fine for an EVF). You should be able to make something in about 4 hours for way less than $100.

Here's a pic, it's simple and works better than anything I've seen. I'm using a Cineroid here (I prefer it for handholding because I can turn on red peaking without going into a menu) but I have rods on my Z-Finder Pro too, so I can swap them quickly.
