Ebay Purchase?

Well I will certainly try my hardest to hold back pouring my heart out and "crying" to any board. Since I do have a track record for crying to online forums, it may be tough but hopefully I can muster the strength.

If you go the ebay route, I wish the best for you. But as a "old time" web user that has been trading since the usenet days, I am just throwing my five cent's worth. I don't want to see people getting ripped off. I'm myself in the process of dealing with a piece of garbage that owes me money for a ebay trade gone bad. I don't like it, it makes me upset and I would not rather see someone go through the same thing. We all like to save money but you have to ask yourself if its worth it. I came to the concusion that I would rather deal with reputable companies. We, as creative people, don't need this crap, if we are to spend so much money on gear, things better work out 100%, and in my eyes, Ebay is not 100% trustworthy. Best of luck for you and stay sharp!

Grey Market, link to explanation

This is in reply to the person in this thread who asked for an explanation of
"greymarket", it was a good question.

KB Camera has an explanation here.

http://www.kbcamera.com/greymarket.htm

Greymarket Cameras have been around for decades, long before EBAY, in
fact years ago when I purchased some things from Adorama in the 80's
I was warned to make sure it wasn't grey market. Not only for the warranty but for the quality in some items.

I guess it isn't possibel to find a DVX100 with a US Warranty anymore.

This is strange though, so your telling me that a 3rd party manufacture is actually making knock off DVX100B's and selling them for a fraction of the price, and the only way to verify if its indeed %100 USA made I have to buy from a authorized dealer/?

None of the DVX100(a,b) are made in the USA.

There's no one making knock off DVX100 cams.

Here's some info, if you want to know what greymarket means:

Check the amount of negative feedback on "sunshine" in the last 12 months alone - 106. Christ, even the positive feedback contains negative comments. Ebay buyers need to grow a set... everyone's so afraid to leave neg feedback - even if they were screwed out of the wide angle lens they were promised. Or if they were harassed by obnoxious bait and switch tactics. Or if their product was 4 weeks late.

I couldn't imagine receiving any product at all that had labels/ups' cut out of the box. I couldn't live with myself.

I'm not trying to rag on anyone. I went through this same phase myself. But I ended up getting a valid USA camera and I'm thrilled I made the right decision.

Grey market means: The camera is stripped of all accessories. Meaning, when you buy the camera from somebody like CCI Camera City, you get the camera. No Battery, no charger, no mic holder, no eyecup, nothing. Also, alot of cameras sold for cheap here in the states are PAL format rendering them useless for us. Alot of the cameras also come with no warranty. Either from the company and/or the manufacters warranty has expired.

When looking at feedback on ebay, it's always a good idea to see if there is positive feedback on the item you want to bid on, i.e., the DVX. Often there is a lot of feedback for lower priced items, but not for more expensive cameras like the DVX. Most companies list a 1-800 number and ask you to call to get "cheaper shipping" or something like that, then try to rope you into buying via non-ebay means, hence, not eligiable for ebay feedback. Also, looking at the mutually withdrawn feedback is helpful as it doesn't count toward the overall feedback total and usually represents negative feedback.

Well Im sketched out of sunshine now because I called them roughly 4 times and every time I asked them how much shipping would be to Canada and all four times i got 4 different prices. All of which were from $99 to $159. I then called B&H and their shipping was $57 to Canada. So when i do calculate everything Sunshine isnt that big of a savings after shipping/tax/duty.

The one thing that I am skeptical about now is whether or not the Panasonic rebate will apply to me... since I'm in Canada. If it won't apply to me could I get someone form the states to receive the package and cheque then and send it to me? What do you guys think?

No, it doesn't.

No, they aren't.
Yes they are, I have seen them for myself online. They dont say they are a USA product b/c they are in PAL format. And my example of the stripped camera is what I have seen from CCI, which are notorious for grey market cams. If you buy from CCI, you get the body, and thats it, thats why it can be sold for so cheap

Re: PAL:
any PAL cam in the USA would normally be quite a bit more expensive, simply because of the volume that comes in. There's simply not much demand for PAL in the USA, and the ones that are available are usually very expensive, selling mostly at MSRP. If you have a source for CHEAP PAL cams in the USA, you'd be onto a goldmine!!!

Re: Greymarket
CCI (and all the other dubious ones) rips persons off by stating that their cams don't include accessories, which they then sell at a SUPER premium. And they sell probably exclusively greymarket cams. However, the term greymarket DOES NOT MEAN that the product doesn't include all accessories. There's a link to a B&H webpage explaining what greymarket (more or less) means. That link is on this very page.

By the way, I doubt that CCI actually buys cameras without accessories; it is far more likely that that is what they SAY on the phone, in order to sell them back to you at a premium. If you however would insist that you'd only want the cam WITHOUT any accessories, they will most likely back out of the deal, and come up with an excuse. Most of the time that excuse is that the cam now is backordered, and no longer for sale immediately.

There's a LOT of information and mis-information regarding these Brooklyn deals, and eBay purchases; just trying to keep things accurate.

I hope you get a great cam at a good price,
ciao.

Hey,

Despite my positive experience of buying a used Panasonic DVX100 (original) on eBay do be careful. Dealers like Sunshine Electronics I am just not sure about and wanted to buy a DVX100B from them.

It all gets down to what you are willing to risk. In my case I was lucky and yes it is true what people say here feedback really means nothing...

Peace,

Chris

Have you tried dvshop.ca? They are selling the dvx100b for about $3900, with a 10 hour battery and an extra 2 year warranty. My understanding is that they guy there will negotiate.

I heard that thecamerabox.com is pretty reasonable, but they do sell grey market. Although, the cameras do include all the accessories and they have excellent reviews.

Are you interested in a used DVX100a?

I did not realize Sunshine was that shady. That many negative feedbacks? Why does eBay allow them to sell?

Vidled, pretty much explained it all, but grey market has nothing to do with what or what is not included

All grey market cameras are the same exact cameras as you would get from a approved dealer,

Some may not approve of grey market but I rather save the nearly $1000 by going grey market, I bought my DVX100B and a XL2 this way. The cameras are the exact same, come with everything as there is no difference whats in the box coming from a grey market dealer and a approved dealer.

The only differance is the possiblity that the warranty will not be vaild, however I have sent off a older canon camcorder for repaired and they approved the warranty despite it being grey market

The research I did shows the paying for common repairs on a DVX due to no warranty, you still would be coming out ahead by saving $1000 via greymarket.
