eBay Lighting Kit?

It should work fine light wise, just beware that build quality isn't great on these kits and you might find stuff breaking.

Unfortunately cheap and reliable lighting is not something that is ever mentioned in the same sentence. Your vest bet is to search for used Mole Richardson fixtures. They will cost more but will last forever.

Yeah, put together your own Mole Richardson 5 piece lighting kit. That's what I'm doing. You'll have pro lighting they use on major motion pictures for just under $1000. Pick off each piece as you get the funds.

I used softboxes on my Fresnels (Arri) all the time while in school. You just have to be careful with them.

Make sure if you're using softboxes to get them big enough. I think the ones I used while using a 600w Arri fresnel is 24"x36". There was a burning smell every once in a while, but a quick adjustment fixes that.

No hot spots at all. They worked great. Just make sure you get HIGH quality boxes. Anything budget will burn, plus the fact that cheap boxes suck.

JRM, depends on what you're lighting, but like Perrone once told me here - the Mole Richardson 1K fresnels are the staple of the industry. It's a good idea to start there. I would pay no more than $200 - $250 for a good quality 1K fresnel with barn doors. You're probably not going to find it sold with a stand though. It's a good idea to search "Mole Richardson Baby fresnel" rather than "407".

As far as other lights are concerned, what kind of scenes do you plan on shooting the most?
