eBAY Heads Up!!

I was just bumming around though eBay tonight and noticed that the *Brooklyn boys* are out in full effect. Guess it's spring time and they were getting the cabin fever!! It would seem that the majority of the DVX100A's on eBay are being offered below or WELL BELOW a legitimate price. Plus they are offering accessories too. Lots of them. And of course, they all say "Brooklyn, NY" or send you to one of the infamous scam sites.

So this may not be new breaking news or whatever....but if anyone *was* considering eBay....please BE CAREFUL. Or better yet, just buy from Rush at evsonline.com

A while back I was bidding on a DVX100 (non a). I consider myself to be pretty eBay-aware having completed about 130 successful transactions as both buyer and seller. After three very-fishy deals where I bid on a camera, very weird things happened and I decided never to buy a DVX100 on eBay. Let me elaborate.

I would place a bid on a camera, then receive direct emails from Yahoo accounts offering to sell me a camera at a lower price than what the seller was offering. If you know anything about the eBay system, you know it is not possible for just anyone to access your email address. Normally, someone would need to contact you through eBay's messaging system which forwards to your email account. Each time I bid on a camera, I received *several* emails from anonymous Yahoo accounts directly to my inbox. The only way that could happen is if the original seller accessed my email address (since I did, in fact, bid on their auction) and either email me or sell my email address to others who emailed me. Either way, this was very fishy. I still occasionally get DVX100 messages in my inbox because of these instances several months ago.

Everything everyone has ever said about buying this camera on eBay is completely true. It is not safe. It is the perfect product/target for a criminal to use to rip you off. Never buy a DVX100 on eBay. Even if you're like me and have always had good dealings in everything else, stay far and away from buying this camera on eBay.

EXACTLY!! I try to stick the with 20 dollar rule usually.....anything more than 20.....and you can forget it. Although I do occasionally buy some *deadstock* nike shoes on eBay for about 100 bux. But no way in the world would I take a *chance* and plop down 2-3 g's on a gamble like that. An authorized dealer would be the ONLY way to go in my opinion.

I guess that's why most people like to buy their BMW's, Mercedes', and Lexus' from an Authorized dealer. Same principle I guess.

It's not the price point that makes me worried. It's how the DVX is so popular that it is a target for thieves.. Much less so, than say, a high end tripod, microphone, or sound mixer. All comes down to knowing who you're buying from.

With a 5K Sachtler head a friend of mine bought a few months ago he sent the guy a cashier's check. Wanna know why he trusted the seller? The guy was a S.O.C. member and my friend decided if he were shafted, at least he would know where to find the guy. So, my friend got his awesome tripod head at half price. But, he knew who he was buying from.

It's hard to do that with a DVX100 when there are hundreds on there every month. I have a feeling this will only worsen if the magazine publishers decline advertisements from Brooklyn stores from so many complaints. They'll have to resort to eBay for most of their online sales. I mean, why not? There isn't a "reseller ratings" for eBay sellers today and they're already hurting as it is. eBay is the only logical place to go....
