Awesome. I wonder if one of the moderators could create a location oriented members section. For example, we would be the "Vol State User Group". I guess it might be a stupid idea, though.
I just moved to Nashville with my HVX last week. I'm trying to get things started here and am looking for people who have cameras who might be trying to get freelance work or at least know some other cameramen locally.
And I agree that there should be a way to sort members by location.
I'm Nashville for about 18 years fulltime in production. I've had my DVX since '03 when we shot a film that sold to Lifetime with 4 DVX100s.
Since then it's been various freelance and another fulltime job in television which just came to an end, and in that time mostly used my DVX for music related projects, commercials and a last summer a 48Hour Project entry.
I just worked a job this weekend where I was LD for a shoot with Jim Caviezel lensed with an HVX200 @ 720P24N to promote his upcoming audio book. Sweet camera.
I'm just south of Nashville (Cool Springs). I shoot a lot of stock footage,
some music vids, commercials, etc. I use an HVX, crane , dolly, shotgun, etc. and edit on Final Cut. I'm shooting the interview portions and Dove award segments of a new show (May 1) to be on satellite called "Source One" that interviews Christian music artists. I shoot B roll for less than typical HVX rental
cost.
I have a background of practical effects and sketch comedy writing. I'm looking to get projects started in Knoxville & find folks with specialized skills. We have an HVX200, boom setup, and hoping to build up a light kit.
Oh wow, you guys are in my backyard. I live in Bristol. Went to ETSU, majored in DIGM/Animation. Doing graphic design right now, but am gearing up for an indie animation in a year or so. Don't know my timetable because I'll be looking for a better paying job soon I think. Also really interested in shooting my own film eventually, or helping out with other people's stuff.
My skills are:
3d animation/modeling/rendering/lighting (not so great at matchmoving)
I build cool props for fun http://www.zephyrstar.com/ms1944
Various graphic design/web design
Currently I am living in Lexington, KY - but I am moving to Nashville next weekend!
I would like to meet other film makers in the Nashville area - to get exposed to new ideas and meet cool people. I am a graphic designer/web designer, but I have a couple years of experience shooting with a Canon XL2 for the advertising company that I currently work for. Anyway, I look forward to moving to Nashville and hopefully I will be purchasing a DVX100 soon (this website has got me hooked!)
zephyr: I do 3D work too! I use Lightwave 3D, but I am hoping to get Maya (when I can afford it)
awsm...maya is good stuff.. I have a little experience with it, but mostly I use 3dsmax. I also hope to get a dvx soon and start doing freelance work to finance either my animated short or an eventual feature. Mainly I want to get some experience with the camera and doing some fun stuff so my feature actually looks good
I've been looking at relocating to the Raleigh NC area...you'll have to let me know what kind of a place Nasheville is...and how the market for our kind of stuff is...I'm pretty much just out of school (with a master's degree) and looking to take a step up.
Raleigh, eh? I've never been there, but NC is nice place to be. There are a few film studios in Nashville that use 3d graphics, but NY/LA/San Fran/Miami/Chicago are the places to be for 3D work.
Yeah for sure, and that was my original intention, but I had this kind of life changing revelation towards the end of my schooling that I would MUCH MUCH rather do my own stories than spend 12 hour days doing animation for some other guy's stuff :O
So it's a tradeoff for right now...I don't get into the industry I trained in and make the big $$ and have no free time VS not having the money but having the free time and being able to work on my OWN story...priceless
And yeah...recently was in Chicago...I got spoiled, it's a really nice town.
Raleigh seems to be growing really fast, has a good economy, young population etc. so that makes it alluring to me. I'm hoping maybe I can find a job with an ad agency...be an actual designer instead of a production grunt, which is what I am now. Still a pretty fun/laid back job, but doesn't pay nearly enough
I know what you are saying. I work for a creative agency in Nashville, doing mostly web work - but I get do a bit of animation using Flash/After Effects - so that is rewarding. I do lots of short personal projects in my free time (films, 3d animations etc). Maybe we could collaborate on something - might be kind of neat!
I live in Franklin,TN and have a Canon XHA1. I was in cable network production for over 10 years and then made a radical career change but now am merging the two.
I'm in the midst of putting together a pilot series and will be looking for help. So don't be surprised if you get an email
Don't know how many will see this thread at this point but thought I'd drop a line anyway. Heading back to my beloved hometown of Nashivlle after several years in the midwest (Ryman and Tootsie's - here I come!). I'll be finishing my documentary based in Chicago while down there but will be returning to Chi-town to finish some shooting. Might need some help with second camera when that comes around. Also looking to make contacts for local shoots in Nashville.
