Above is a link to a music video we're using as a trailer. The footage is not color corrected. More info about the film is available there on that site, and also here:

We're pretty much done w/ the post sound mix, color correction and opening titles. I'll see if I can recut a teaser trailer from the color corrected footage.

I'm debating "leaking" a dvd or two of the completed film out to any other serious filmmakers who want to see what the camera is capable of in the hands of a good DP (not me). My arm could possibly be twisted by a sympathetic soul.

Every song in the music driven feature is written by Tom Waits and performed by artists such as [the] caseworker (the music video), Frente, Drugstore, Pete Shelley, Lydia Lunch and others. See what you think.

Hope to see you on the festival circuit soon!

Thanks!

Wow, that looks great ;D.  I liked the music video a lot, it does not give away the film at all.  I was woundering what brand the steadicam was, and how you filmed the movie. "what settings" because it looks very movie like. ;D

The chicago film festival is next month; any chance the film will be showing there????
I would love to see a completed version of the film.

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

Very nice. Did you guys use an anamorphic lens to get the widescreen affect?

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

hi ya'll -

thanks for the kind words. I'll look into all the questions. I'm asking the DP to compile a complete gear / tech list to post on the films website. I know we used a century optic .7mm wide and some ND filters, but I don't know which ones.

We did not shoot anamophic. Knowing that we are not, most likely going to get a "real" commercial theatrical release we decided to shoot full frame and then add a matte in post.

However we did shoot 24pA and in hindsight we could have just as easily shot 24p standard (more easily). Truth be told, unless you _know_ you are blowing up to HD 24p, or film, I would not reccomend 24pA. If you're staying safely in the world of NTSC, shoot 24p standard. All the conversions back and forth in/out of 24p through post I don't think helps the footage. If I had it to do all over again, I would have taken our output up to HD rather than DigiBeta. But, live and learn.

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

24PA is good, though, for making web clips and authoring DVDs...

If you're staying on tape, then yeah, there isn't much a point. But in my opinion, it is worth it if you're putting anything on the web or DVD.

Your clip here looks just that much smoother playing in it's native frame rate. It looks puuuurrrrty :)

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

Rather than compressing a 60i video clip with a 3:2 pulldown in it, you can compress a native 24P file - well, okay, 23.98 :P

But this means that not only does it play smoother, in it's native frame rate, but it also is a smaller file size. You're only compressing 24 frames per second rather than 30.

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

Good discuss on 24pA verus 24p standard. Life is full of tradeoffs!

The one thing about 24pA that was most problematic in my experience is anytime you have to deal with a conversion out of 24 frame proper. Again, in my case we should have output from FCP Pro to a HD 24p format. We went out to DigiBeta, and then did our color correction and work tapes from there (uncompressed).

Again, knowing that our primary release is going ot be on DVD and not theatrical. So the irony for us is that, after all the work to conform in 24pA, our DVD will still be a 29.97 NTSC from DigiBeta... Going out to a 24p HD format would have been more expensive, as would all of the costs to work with it. But in hindsight I have to consider that it may have been worth it. Total budget of the feature was $40k, so every penny counted.

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

When will the dvd be available; I would love too see the completed film. :D

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

We've just started submitting to festivals now. Word is the DVD could be out in February 2005. I'm contemplating making a special "preview" filmmakers edition of the DVD available before then with added geek stuff mostly of interest only to other filmmakers. So I guess we're still figuring it out.

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

I likde dude. The music had a good tempo. I also liked the look. Next time show some tits.LOL

Re: East Of Sunset Feature Shot on DVX!

LOL indeed! You'll have to wait for the feature for that! Five scripted sex scenes, four made it to final cut...
