Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

WOW! These images look incredibly FILM like! The only thing that looks bad is the red candle. It only looks like this in screen captures right? It doesn't look like that in video as well, does it? I cant wait to see the movie though... It looks interesting!

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

I would love to see some Color Correction on these. I think it would help.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

yeah -

COLOR CORRECTION... man, footage from this camera falls apart real fast. More so than any Mini-DV I've worked with... must be something in the way they get the 24p.

We're going to layoff to Mini-DV from FCP4.1, then upres to DigiBeta and Color Correct from there... maybe it'll help...

also these stills are from an DVstream output, not from the editing timeline itself, so there's one generation loss already.

I've done some test and man... what you get is what you get... Combustion definately did a better job than FCP, but I'm hoping a tape to tape system will be even better.

FYI, we shot 24pA...

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

Thanks for the notes parasite and I apologise for the one line critique. I was leaving the office.

I think the grabs are nice. There is some nice compostions going on and your talent, well, they look like talent and they look interesting. I am curious to see a trailer and find out what this is all about.

I do feel (and I speak for all the footage I have captured myself) that some CC would greatly benefit. Maybe it's the the standard that is typical these days in film? I wouldnt even worry about generation loss at all. Exploring the palette given to us only serves to strengthen the imagery.

Again, I didn't mean to be so 'blase' in my intitial comment! :P

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

DVX100 rocks!!!!
Very cool!! Can't wait to try my camera on a real project.

Anyway, all the best guys

Fidel.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

Hey john,

on offense taken at all. you've got good eyes and instincts.

In fact, color correction is a top priority for us on this project. We used a bit of atmosphere to add depth of field, since we were shooting mostly with wide lenses. This is a trick the DP tought us. Anyway, sometimes the levels are inconsistent, and we need to color correct the saturation down in shots to match atmosphere. Not just that stuff, but over all color correction as well (lighting, etc).

Once we lock picture I'll put some "before" and "after" QT clips up so y'all can see the tests!

rock on.

If they weren't sitting on a black background, you'd know at a glance.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

Looking good. I'm continually amazed by the DVX100's resolution and sharpness. One minor thing, though, is that I noticed that the edges were softer towards the outside of the frames. Are you using a wide adapter? Is this typical? (I ask in sincere curiosity.) :)

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

Wow! Looks amazing. Best thing I've seen yet. Do you know what the settings were?? It looks like the Master Ped was turned up high.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

What song covers Wedding presents. It seems a great combination.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

we shot on the DVX100, not the DVX100A (we bought the dvx100, about two months before the new camera came out)...

we also shot at 24p Advanced. The DP Chris Squires, did an amazing job with all the lighting, and atmosphere, even more so considering that we shot the feature in 12 days over 4 locations (all practical).

I don't know what his camera settings were - I know he made some adjustments. We did camera test and were trying our best to avoid the compression artifacts we've seen in other work.

FYI - we shot on stedi-cam (not glidecam), we had all the wireless goodies and we had to disable the wireless monitor feed because the camera does not have enough RF shielding. We got weird interference in the dailies and had to go hardline after day two.

Re: East of Sunset, DVX Screen Grabs!

yeah, atmosphere is the smoke machine. we got a really cheap little one and it did a great job. It really makes a difference in softening up the look, smoothing out the lighting, and adding some depth of field, especially when shooting w/ wide lenses where you have none...
