Ease of focusing the 4 contenders?

Hey I don't know if anyone's seen what this camera can do but our early work is certainly as sharp as anything you've seen from the HVX or Canon...better detail than most of the footage I've seen posted so far, so I have a hard time imagining it wouldn't be as good or better for film out than either.

I'm really on the fence between these two cameras. I got to play with the HVX a little. I wasn't sure I really liked the "zoom in on the middle" to focus idea. Why? I'm composing something pretty and that's almost never going to put my subject down the middle. Now obviously can be worked around that in most cases BUT if i want to pull focus from upper right of the frame to lower left by eye isn't the JVC system more likely to help me out?

I haven't gotten the opportunity to use a JVC yet - so I can't make any reasonable comments one way or the other about it.

Evin,

At DVexpo I asked you question about Back Focus issues that on some camcorders ( small ones ) go slighty off on wide shots. You mentioned to me that the HVX200 never looses back focus because of how the HVX focuses? Someone asked me this however I was not sure what you told me. I belive you said the front element doesn't move but the ccd is shifted for focus. Anyways can you explain that again..

If you know too Barry, you can chime in.....

Thanks.

You're welcome,
And correct, the focus on closed lens systems (AFAIK) like the DVX, HVX & Z1 is achieved by moving the chip block, not a lens element. That accounts for why they do not need backfocus adjustment, you are always backfocusing them. This allows for a simpler, more compact optical system that still renders the required resolution.

Hope that helps.

Again, you guys that continually slam the Canon lens... did you even TRY the focus or zoom presets? You can set an in and out for the focus and zoom if you want and even control the timing of the move. Learn to use the tool before you talk crap about it. You can basically do a move that would require 2 people most the time all by yourself!

ash =o)

Nice point, Ash, which somehow is always conveniently ignored. I love that feature, it is very powerful.

Someone I was talking to had worries about back focus like I did. I just couldn't remember what you told me to clear that up.

Thanks Evin!

Here's a few more H1 clips. "CarlosToMeetBob" is a little more manual focusing on the fly, and "CarlosStandUp" is meant to show a little exposure latitude. I intentionally underexposed Carlos in order to not blow out the background. He was standing in a covered porch outside a small lodge in the Sundance resort.

I didn't decide yet but with your stuff XL-H1 is a good possibility to film-out regarding its sharpness (the best under $10,000). My problem is the sound because I'd like to record the sound together with the image and...
