Oh. My. God.
I hate Windows, and only put up with it because of my video editing habits. If you're like me (and many of you are), you are waiting until an inexpensive alternative comes along to knock the Wintel duopoly off its throne. The Mac has been looking more and more attractive, since they now run a flavor of BSD unix under the hood, and they've done an incredible job with their eye candy GUI, but the Apple solution is not inexpensive.
I've also been a Linux guy for years, and have been waiting for something like Cinelerra to mature to the point where I can do real work on it.
Enter dyne:bolic (http://dynebolic.org), a custom Linux distribution which boots from a CD. You don't have to install it; you just download the ISO image, burn it onto a CD-R, pop it in your bootable CD tray, and restart your machine. Up pops Linux, preconfigured with all sorts of multimedia-handling software.
Why we care at DVXUSER is that dyne:bolic comes with Cinelerra, notoriously difficult to install and configure, but all the work has already been done for you. Why we care further is that Cinelerra edits a variety of video formats, such as HD in 1080i, 720P, and 480P, and at interesting framerates, SUCH AS 23.976 fps. Why we care even further is that Cinelerra supports render farms out of the box; you can boot up multiple systems you've got lying around running SETI and use them as transparent render nodes on your home (or office) network.
Oh yeah.
I'm very excited, and its because I'm typing this message from a dyne:bolic system right now, while Cinelerra is processing one of my video clips. People, we need to look at this technology. Tired of Adobe jerking you around? Tired of the mammoth costs of FCP? Tired of whatever else you're tired of?
I'm going to start playing around with dyne:bolic, Cinelerra, and some of the other goodies on the disk, and report in on how well it will work with the DVX100. So I have very little information other than my excitement at this moment. My girlfriend has just become a Linux window again.
