"This demonstrates the feasibility of embedded optical zoom and autofocus for a wide range of applications including cell phone cameras, eyeglasses and virtual and augmented reality hardware"
I've been anticipating stuff like that for ages - at some point bulky lenses will be a thing of the past, and you'll be able to have excellent quality electronically controlled lenses that will be quite tiny and a real revolution in camera technology especially with a strong software component. Of course, when will it be ready for prime time and actually widely used, is another matter. Think of all the money people invested in lenses that will one day become obsolete.
