I've searched the forums, but I couldn't find an answer to this question. Anyone done any thorough testing on the dynamic range with both the DVCPRO and the DV format?
DVCPRO and DV are identical as far as video quality goes. The main difference between the formats is the tape they're recorded on. The data is fundamentally identical.
Well, one exception is in PAL territory, where DVCPRO = 4:1:1 and DV = 4:2:0...
Haven't tested for that, but I can't see why there would be any difference. Both are 8-bit codecs, both are coming from the same DSP, from the same source, so they should be exactly the same.
Technically they should be the same since they have the same luminance compression. That said, I've heard people claim that DVCProHD/DVCPro50 retains more information thanks the less harsh color compression. One user on this forum, can't remember who, claimed that while the images look the same initially, one can bring more detail back from blowouts with DVCProHD and DVCPro50. I havn't tested this myself.
