dynamic link problem, PPro cs5 -> AE cs5

I asked this in the Adobe forums, but got no responses. So I'm going to post it here too hoping that someone here can help me out.

Context: I'm working on a two camera interview in Production Premium CS5. Did the standard stuff in PPro - a source sequence with both cameras, did some rough editing here (syncing the two cameras, trimming the clips, etc.). Then nested the source sequence into a multi-cam edit sequence. Used the multi-cam monitor to switch back and forth between cameras, etc. All is good.

But my editor wants to make three separate videos from this interview. So I thought the logical thing would be to nest this muiti-cam edit sequence into three separate target sequences. Then I could get the camera switching done just once, and slice-'n-dice the three target sequences to make the short-'n-sweet individual videos that make my editor happy. Did this for the first target (a single question and answer). The result looks fine in PPro, and editor approves. All that's left is adding the lower thirds.

Everything is fine until I go to export to AE via dynamic link so I can add lower thirds and finish up. What PPro sends to AE isn't just my target sequence, but it also sends the multi-cam edit sequence and the source sequence as well. But.... it ignores it all and will only show me the Acam footage (that is, the video track that's topmost in my source sequence). Bcam doesn't show up at all. What's really surprising (to me anyway) is that now PPro isn't showing the alternating cameras either. It was fine (and approved, sigh...) before I sent the clips to AE, now it's toast. Weird, that.

Three questions: First, what did I do wrong? IOW, how does one export a multi-cam edit sequence via dynamic link from PPro to AE, and have it show up in AE with the alternating camera tracks showing?

Second, how can I recover from this? Do I really have to delete my target sequence in PPro and start over (and by extension, delete the AE project also)? Is there no way to sever a dynamic link once it's made?

Third, if the answer is to render output from PPro, then import it into AE (that is, bypassing dynamic link), can someone point me to a link describing how that's done? I'm working in AVCHD and don't really want to start rendering and re-rendering because of the image degradation (like repeatedly saving a JPEG file in Photoshop), so I'm thinking this probably involves an intermediate "editing CODEC" but I've got zero experience working this way.

Don't feel bad -- no one on the Adobe PPro CS5 forum knows either apparently.

After seven different failures, the only way I could complete the job was to render an intermediate from PPro. Then start a new PPro project, import the intermediate footage, and send that to AE. Then I could add my lower thirds, and harmony (if this is harmony) was restored. It's a stupid way to work (wasteful and lowers the quality of the final result). What can I tell ya? At least it *does* work in its fashion. Sigh...

After it's done and submitted, of course I find a way. :D

A method that works, sorta, is to create the composition in AE, save it, then in PPro, do a File -> Adobe Dynamic Link -> Import After Effects Composition... The one method I hadn't tried yet, or course.

This actually brings in my lower third and lets me add it to my sequence just like any other video. Cool.

But.... with CS5 I'm having trouble getting changes made in AE to show up in PPro. DL should make that "transparent" to the user. Right... the only way I could get an updated AE composition to reflect back into PPro over this particular DL was to delete the composition from the PPro project, save and close the project, exit PPro, restart PPro, open the project, and re-import the AE comp.

Still, this beats the heck out of having to render an intermediate, so this is progress. And it's probably not worth pursuing farther with CS6 on our doorstep. With the changes to DL in CS6, this problem most likely was either buried or fixed.

Your experience isn't normal. When you change anything in the AE comp, it is reflected pretty much immediately upon switching back to Premiere Pro.
