Using overhead boom mics, or wireless lavs, is cool and trendy these days. But there are many video shooting situations where you just don't have the time to set them up properly, and seeing the mic in the shot is not at all objectionable, often the norm. Even if you only make narrative films, it makes sense to have a handheld mic in your kit, and at this price, it's an easy decision.
The Shure VP64 has a long-standing reputation as a low cost, high quality handheld microphone suitable for on-camera interviews, voice overs, and other vocal use.

The mic is dynamic (no need for phantom power or batteries) The omni-directional pickup pattern provides uniform pickup on or off axis, eliminating the need for critical positioning. The frequency response of the VP64 has an upper midrange presence rise that adds crispness and clarity to speech.

I've had this mic for a few years and it's seen some use (minor wear marks in a few places -- actual pics above), but it works perfectly. In fact, because I hadn't used this VP64 for some years, I was actually surprised at how good it sounds! Listen for yourself...here is a short, one-minute audio sample from this mic:

I also have an uncompressed WAV file of this same sample. Just ask for the link.
I'm including a 24-foot cable with male/female XLR connectors (with a Rip Tie strap), as well as a simple but rugged desk stand (it has a cast-iron base) and rubber mounting clip. Some shots may call for a mic on a desk or table top, and of course you can use this for your own voice overs and narration recording.

The VP64, with a plastic mounting clip and foam windscreen sells for $76 at NYC's large video retailer. Our asking price for this mic, plus the cable and stand -- the whole package -- is only $50.
If you're in or near NYC, You can inspect, and take, cash-and-carry, from my UWS location. For extra charges, with a PayPal pre-payment, I can easily ship.
