DVXuser Tai Helmet Fund

Jarred - I'm sure you're right. Danny, was extremely generous and I'm sure it wasn't the first or last time he will help others through his kindness. Thank you again, Danny.

Because of a spontaneous DVXuser Telethon we were able to raise another $215 in one hour (TAKE THAT HELP-ME-BUY-A-G5-GUY!!!!) We have surpassed the 500 helmet goal, with room to spare (incase of taxes and delivery charges). Safe to say we reached our goal.

Thanks to everyone for their support during this helmet drive. I'm sure most of you will be happy when PK stops bugging you. That day is coming soon enough.

Next week you will see what all your hard work and generosity has done. :)

UPDATE:

We spent today making final arrangements for tomorrows ceremonies. All the helmets needed the visors screwed on and stickers applied to the back. We got some help from students so we got a lot done very quickly. Signs also had to be made for each of the schools.

Here are some photos of todays activities at the 3 schools.

The ceremonies will be held tomorrow morning and afternoon at 3 different schools. The Vice-Governor and Police Patrol Chief will make speeches. Also, there will be local and national TV coverage. I won't be able to mention the names of all 45 people who donated but I will mention, numerous times, that the helmets are from "many foreigners who care about you." All cards/stickers/signs mention a website and the website will have all the names of people who donated.

Thank you again for all your support and generosity. Tomorrow it all pays-off.

Thanks, Terry. You were a big help.

UPDATE
It's over. Wish you all could have been there. It was great! Everyone did an amazing job and the students really loved the helmets and the police safety lessons. The Vice-Governor and head of the Education Department both spoke at all 3 of the ceremonies. There was local and national tv coverage and a lot of photos taken. I didn't take the DVX because it would have been one more thing to keep track of. Below is a link to some photos.

yay... thanks everyone that donated to the first ever DVXuser charity event.... hope this will help save some lives.

Jarred - I'm almost certain it will and it couldn't have been done without all of you.

500 students received helmets (300 yesterday and 200 in 2 weeks). A lot of those students are going to have an accident. It's undeniable. I'm almost certain that 1% of those who received helmets and listened to all of the presentators will do something to help protect themselves. And 1% is better than 0%! So if 5 people have an accident (which is likely) and aren't hurt, then it was worth it. If 5 people think more about the quality of their life, it was worth it. 1% sounds like a low estimate because it is. But it's an estimate that is possible and, therefore, the reason for everyone's generosity and hard work.

Here's a photo of the back of Pathumtep Jr. High where we first spoke and donated helmets. (The length of the parking area is a football field and it has 4-5 rows of motorcycles. How many helmets can you see?) There are 6 schools like this in Nong Khai and hundreds more schools like this around Thailand. Not to mention, millions more motorcycles. Now imagine roads where laws are not enforced. It's mayhem.

FYI: This Jr. High, with over 2,800 students, is located right next to the prison.

How in the hell does anyone find they're ride at the end of the day???

Great job PK, and everyone who participated!

Outstanding job P.K. Thanks to you and all the generous DVXusers that contributed to this worthy cause. I'm sure that these helmets will literally saving many lives. Hopefully, by the time P.K. is done, everyone will be thinking it's cool to wear a helmet.

Well Done PK !

Maybe you can talk to a local politician to pass a low and / or the local bike manufacturers or dealers to add a free 3.25 Helmet to every bike sold.

It is easier to enforce such a law on companies than on individuals.

Just a thought.

Danny.

That's a great idea, Danny. I'll talk with the largest seller of motorcycles in this area and see what they think. (They also own the college where I teach.) Rich family, but VERY stingy with money. I'll give it a shot!

Thanks again for your huge contribution to the project, Danny.

When I was in Jr. High, sometimes I thought I was in prison

Great job PK!

Now for your next mission: I know a bunch of guys who might hurt themselfves in traffic accidents unless they get an HVX with some P2 cards. Think you can help?

SumFun - I'm on it! :)

UPDATE
All those who donated should have received an e-mail with this info, but just incase, here it is again: There is now a website (under-construction) with more photos and some short videos for you to watch. Go on, check out what you've done!

I received your email and I checked your website. It's nice to see them receiving the helmets.

You did a great work.

Keep me informed if you need more support for that action or an other one.

UPDATE
200 more helmets are being ordered (this time no pink ones). We are thinking about taking a different approach. Instead of having a big ceremony (which is like a dime a dozen here). We, instead, will go around to different schools and leave helmets on motorcycles which do not have a helmet. Surprise! There will also be notes left explaining the gift. Other motorbikes will have a note asking "Where's Your Helmet?"

A DVXuser asked yesterday if I was still accepting donations. The answer is yes. I have decided to make the Helmets for Students fund an ongoing project. Thanks to "sink" for his kind donation and help.

In the near future I will be starting numerous other "direct response" solutions and people will have the option of what area they are interested in helping. All funds will be donated to that specific program (ex: AIDS awareness, books for schools, environmental clean-up, etc.)

Thanks again for making the Helmets for Students program a huge success.

UPDATE
Police followed thru on their promise (kind of) and had numerous policemen outside my college, giving students tickets for not wearing a helmet and for no licenses (most students don't have licenses). The Patrol Chief then called me and said "Mr. Kirk, did you see? Are you happy?" Yes, we're all happy you're doing your JOB!!!

We were able to order 250 helmets (bringing the total to 550). They will be delivered next week. Two more ceremonies have been scheduled for Aug. 23rd and 24th.

pk out!

Update: Learned today that the accident that occurred on Friday involved two people, not one. A boyfriend and girlfriend died.

Could have been us. This is our only vehicle. We've chosen being poor (by white American standards) in the form of lives in the performing arts.

front to back, Bernie the Beagle (adopted yesterday), me, the significant other.

Also PK, you mentioned that if drivers were safe you wouldn't need helmets. Well the road can rise up and bite you at anytime. Was changing lanes here in New Orleans last October and due to poor road repair my front wheel fell in a 6" wide, 10" long, 4" deep rut alongside a streetcar rail. I was thrown off the bike immediately, flew through the air, somehow had the presence of mind to pull my elbows in close to my body and placing my palms out but relaxed, barrel rolled several times on the asphalt, and came to a stop seeing the curb edge smack into my visor at a 45 degree angle. I was going about 40. I was stunned, couldn't get up for a minute, but suffered only bruises, a torn jacket which I repaired with a "pothole repair services" gen X hipster iron on patch, and two pairs of gloves as I had doubled up that day do to the cold and both layers ripped through to my palms. Other than that I still have a stiff upper right arm where the shoulder muscle and the bicep meet (no health insurance so no doctor). I was lucky, especially considering my experience ended with me eating curb face first. Helmets. Helmets. Helmets.

This is a wonderful wonderful good thing you have done / are doing. You are a good egg.

Regarding the suggestion that they legally be required at time of sale - helmets not Beagles, what about making that law, but requiring the citizen to pay for the helmet?
You said that most had the money to buy, but were just not educated as to the value of using a helmet. Would be like a license or registration fee but for a helmet. If they can afford to buy a bike, can probably afford to buy a helmet, but I have no idea of the value of $3.25 over there. Immediate problem with this suggestion -- now that you are required to buy something, vendors might gouge the consumers, so would have to keep that in check somehow. But that's what makes it attractive to that stingy $ family, rather than donating sales, they are reaping guaranteed sales.

BTW we are not cutesy and don't think Bernie's our baby, but this is the best way to get him to the Vet / over to a friends house who also has dogs -- OK, that does sound like a play date so I'm going to shut up about it. The goggles are for wind and gravel.

P.S.
If you start a Helmets for Beagles fund let me know.
