DVXuser Tai Helmet Fund

Thanks Jarred. Photos are guaranteed! :)

Tomorrow I will speak with the governor or the education department and plan a safety day at all the schools. I will then visit each school, with police officers (who will teach safety) and afterwards donate helmets. It might not be until July, so we may have more time to raise some more money. I'll know more in the next few days.

Thanks again DVXusers.

Last week I sent an email to 40 friends and family regarding Helmets for Students and got NO responses. But the response from DVXuser, from people I've never met before, has been incredible. Why is that?

Do any of you sometimes feel that complete strangers support you in your dreams more than friends and family?

I believe it stems from the uniqueness of pursuing our dreams with no clear cut path. And knowing we're all alike on that front gives us the feeling that we're in this together - a sense of community.

The level of honesty and openness we display on this forum may be more than the level we display or experience from family and friends.

But, as Martha would say, it's a good thing. :)

Your avatar is a good thing. If we could bottle the goodness inside your avatar and distribute it to all the countries in the world. We'd have no war, poverty, or annoying boy bands. The cure to all life's problems is more cow bell and Terry Lasater.

Oh man! Yesterday a truck tried to deliver 280 helmets to the college. That would have been fine, if I had ORDERED SOME HELMETS! But I didn't. I've only been pricing around, waiting for all donations to roll in, etc. Either my Thai isn't that great or these people are trying to pressure a sale. Most likely both.

Unfortunately I had to turn them away since I don't carry 33,000 baht ($850) as pocket change.

I'd like to donate one Schneider 4x4 Black Frost 1/4 filter to the cause.
It was new in January 2005 and never used on a project. Looks excellent and includes case.

Make offers to P.K. If he agrees, then you PayPal him and I'll send you the filter.

wells - what a great idea. I've got stuff laying around here that someone may want. Might not be DVX related though. Anyone here collect stamps?

thisiswells - That is a really good idea, if you're willing to do that. Almost like a garage sale. How can we spread the word?

Pookie - That is hilarious! :) How many seperate photos/elements did you use? Your creations are getting more elaborate. I like how the price doesn't change if you buy 2 helmets (there's no discount). ...Thanks man. It's good to start the day with a laugh.

Pookie your skills continue to amaze me.. those Photoshops are getting more and more real every day.

Just wanted to keep you all up-to-date.

- We've raised enough for about 240 helmets.
- The police and I have written a letter to the education department requesting specific dates and times to visit the local schools. Should have a schedule next week.
- A friend is forwarding the "Helmets for Students" program to her good friend who is the CEO of Bell Sports, the #1 maker of helmets. There is a chance they will donate some helmets.
- Local tv coverage is guaranteed and there's a possibility for national news coverage because a friend works for a Thai tv station.

That's the latest. Once again thank you for all your support. Keep spreading the word.

UPDATE:
- Spoke to the Director of Education last Friday. At the end of this month we will all be meeting with the police department and begin scheduling what schools to visit and what dates.
- The CEO of Bell Helmets has received my request. He seems interested. Should have a definite response sometime next week. Cross your fingers.
- I will be recording video of Thai students on their motorcycles. Video sometimes speaks louder than words and photos. Should be uploaded in the next day or two.
- Donations have stopped coming in. :( Please help spread the word. We have until the end of the month or early July.

Thanks to everyone who has helped support this project. You are all directly improving the lives of Thai students.

I just PayPaled you a helmet, so maybe it'll kick start a tidal wave of donations. (Although I'll be happy if it just keeps someone's head in one piece)

Got it! Thanks Owen. You just helped me buy a new mattebox, ....I mean you just helped protect a students life. :)

Update: Still waiting for the Educaiton department to schedule the school appearances to educate and donate helmets. We're still far from my goal of 500 helmets. Currently everyone's donations are still sitting in PayPal. I'm going to wait until the last minute to buy as many helmets as possible. So, until then, people can still donate or tell others. Remember, every bit helps and can add up to a lot of help. Thanks everyone!

Wow! That was very generous of you Terri. I really appreciate it and I'm sure the students will too.

Thanks!

Just an hour ago, while going to the college, I saw another Thai person die in a motorcycle accident. Once again, right outside the college. After speaking on the radio for 30 minutes I left and there was no sign an accident had even occured or that someone had just died there. The crowd of spectators, the emergency vehicles, everything was gone. Accidents are so common that the thai people are very efficient with the clean-up. Sad. Prevention isn't a huge concern but "dealing with the aftermath" they're experts at.

So far we've raised about $600. I'm matching the largest donation, which has been $100. So we're still VERY far from a goal of 500 helmets. Please tell everyone you know. Every bit helps.

I spoke with the education department again yesterday to light a fire under them. They have a list of schools that need about 1,500 helmets. I told them we won't be able to do that but but we sure can make a HUGE dent in that figure. Sometime soon I should have dates of when the donation ceremonies will be.

Thanks to everyone for their support.
