I was curious to see how many of you would be interested in some sort of DVXuser podcast (whether audio or video).

Would you be interested in a DVXUser podcast of some kind?

What would you want from a DVXUser podcast?

How often would you want it, and what sort of content would you want to see?

Okay, a whopping 3 people would like to see a video podcast so far.
Hmnmm, maybe we were overestimating the interest in a podcast of any kind.

VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO oh did i mention VIDEO. Glad i started that last thread kinda been staring me in the face for a while now and am surprised no one else mentioned (gosh im so clever)

Tutorials and interviews with filmmakers (with clips and commentary) would be awesome. That sounds like a big job but I'd love to help as part of any collaborative effort. I'm not really sure exactly what a podcast is or how it works. I'd imagine it'd be like a television station on the net that runs constantly? Or is it for IPod Video's and PSP's? Maybe an explanation would help more people get excited, lay out how it would work, what kind of content would be included, etc. Could it start as just people's shorts running and then evolve? Looking forward to seeing what becomes of this.

As long as you have itunes installed on your system (which is a free app) you can watch a video or audio podcast. Yes by possesing a PSP or ipod you can transfer those podcasts across to make them portable but it is not essential to viewing. All you need is a computer (mac or pc) an internet connection and iTunes hope that helps.

That's actually why I sarted this poll. After a few people responded in another thread that they might be into the idea, and Jarred said he'd be interested, I thought we should figure out what people would want from a podcast on DVXUser. So I'm hoping people will go ahead and post what kind of content they are looking for, and how they think it should work.

I was thinking something short, maybe 5-10 minutes, maybe once every two weeks or so. It does make it a much bigger job to do video as opposed to audio only, but I agree it would be much cooler.

The only complication with video is that it would make it harder for people to colaborate I think. The beauty of audio is that it can easily be recorded and emailed, downloaded, etc. I suppose if someone wanted to contribute some video they could compress it first then post it...but then the editing would be a bigger pain (dealing with compressed footage).

Personally I like the idea of interviews...and would like to see more content dealing with the artistic and business side of indie filmmaking as opposed to the tech stuff. Some tutorials woudl be good...generic type tutorials (lighting, etc) that aren't gear specific (although some specific DVX and HVX tuturials would be useful). But I think many of us here would gain more form discussion and interviews about preproduction methods, legal issues, distribution channels, and other things like that. Maybe it's just me.

I just feel like we sometimes get so bogged down in tech talk that we forget what the real goal is for many of the people here. An audience doesn't care whether or not you shot 720P or 1080i - and knowing the differences won't help any of us get something finished, sold, and distributed.

Perhaps an extension of the sites content Luis. I dont know maybe a tutorial section (lighting, cinematogarphy, using a certain app like after effects PS- id like to help here). A short movie of the week a user polled/ voted video ie music video short film etc that can be put on. Interviews with industry experts eg Jan (if she's listening). A DIY section were people have built kit and can give you a quick breakdown of how that kit was put together. Reviews of cool new kit. A compression section (AAARRRGGGHH my heads hurting wih the possibilites) man this could be COOL!!!! Obviouly time paramaters are of importance you dont want a 1/2 hour show whosee gonna dowload that. Keep it short like Luis says.

My big question with doing a video podcast is still workflow.
Ideally people from the forums would be able to contribute to the podcast (otherwise it would be up to one person to shoot the whole thing, and seeing as we're all spread out across the globe that wouldn't make for a very good show). So what is the best way to handle video from long distances?

The last thing I want to deal with is having to mail tapes or DVDs. Seems like we should be able to do this all online.

Maybe at the very least, we could let people do their own podcasts, then make a section for them on here? Perhaps specify the types of things we'd like to see and open it up to the entire community. I guess it would have to be moderated to make sure info is good. I think there'd be some people interested (and more if and when it goes up). Also, doing it this way would keep it from becoming a huge beast that the Mod's (or whoever's running it) would have to constantly maintain? Just brainstorming here....

Not a bad idea Ryan... though what I really liked about a DVXuser podcast was the idea that different users could contribute to make a single show (not to get too cheesy here) but then it's something created BY this community for this community. There's something cool about that, versus many different videos (which is what we have now in the clips section).

Yeah, I like your idea better in theory. It just sounds like too much trouble to get it started. How about an open call for Podcasts now? Say people bite and we get a couple nice multi-faceted casts......clips, interviews, tutorials, whatever. There's gotta be somebody doing something remotely similar to this out there. Then as other people see them and get a better idea, we could try doing a DVXuser sponsored one. ( Ok, maybe just DVXuser endorsed :cheesy:  ) I'd just hate to see this fall on its face because of logistics.

I think the a core team of a couple of people (assnine here, but i'm not vlounteering [yet] just sugesting) as admins coudl easily manage a simple workflow of reciveing material and placing it in an automated playout list (prety simple stuff, like a mailing list, jsut different) that woudl then be released each week/2weeks/timeperiod to the podcast woudl work great.

As the pod-cast is web based anyway (the whoel idea) it wouldn't be at all unreasonable [if not expected] to transfer the data over the net.

Baiscally have a submission page where you can register as a producer and then upload your podcasts for review. Provided there arn't loads of submissions (=over successfull) it shouldn't be too hard for the admins to pick suitable ones and place them in the 'playlist' semi regularly. Especially if (and there woudl need te be) where guidlines on submissions (everythign from length and content rules to technical requirements).

I little harsh for those stuck on dial up.. but i'm sure everyoen who want to can find someone/place to upload if they need to.

The biggest requirement would actually probably be a server with lots of bandwidth, and someno to pay for that.. Sponsors? Like DVXuser?

Just ideas.
