DVXUser Photography Challenge

I could be a little naive but I can't believe that it would be SO important to win a little photography contest that someone would resort to that. And if they did, well, I'd have to feel kind of sorry for them if that's the big moment in their life. This is for fun. And to learn.[/QUOTE

you are absolutely correct, i was just making sure!

This is my photo:

It's my little cousin Alexandros who has syndrome of down.

This was my picture

It was a thrill and a pain to see people assume this was a digital manipulation. It was one exposure. :)

Let me say this, Sarena is cool. The water was pretty cold and I gotta give her there props for going in the water for about a half an hour.

The shutter was open for 15 seconds to expose the sky and moon, and then a home-made ring-light was turned on (on a dock) for 1/2 seconds. This exposes the model for that time while she is kept in the darkness for the rest of the shutter, not effecting the rest of the picture. You can see the reflection in the
water of the ringlight's bulbs.

In photoshop I did curves, dodge and burn and a layer mask. I also cloned some of water in front of her because you could see her legs. The original image below. (I just cloned out some visibility as per her request to not put it on the internet, lol)

And here is an outtake, perhaps I should have entered this instead. :love4:

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted but here are the results for the top ten finishers:

1. Waiting for Lunch
2. Omya
3. Balled Emotion
4. Downtown
5. Untitled (Horse Films)
6. Anne
7. Untitled (girl shot)
8. The Light
9. My Friend Erick
10. Taking a Nap

I have also adjusted the gallery to show all votes, but will the person who submitted Waiting for Lunch (I had to clear out my PMs) please PM me with what the topic is for next week along with an address so I can send you your gift card. The top three finishers also get a custom name from Jarred!

Thank you for everyone who entered and I hope to see you next week! This was truly a great learning experience and pretty bad ass if I do say so myself.

-Jeremy

EDIT:

I just read through all the posts, and I think it would be a bit pathetic if soemone tried to stuff the ballot for something as simple as a fun photo contest. This is about learning and about having fun. I do not have access to the passwords and if it ever came down to where anyone of us felt like we had to investigate voting habits or results then it makes more sense not to do this at all. This is about having fun and learning so it doesn't make sense to assume that there was anything sketchy done.

I really liked the one you entered as well as this one. If you had entered this one though, I think I would have determined it to be yours based on the style, which I like btw.

Great work, everyone. And wow, talk about variety. Look at all those different styles. There's a great mix of people here. I love it! I want to take a picture of it so it will last longer. LOL :) And a big Thank You to Mikko and Jeremy for their generous donations. The money raised from just this one contest will help A LOT of people. Don't forget, Isara is located in a place where a two year college degree only costs $250.

Finally found the original file for "Born Again". Less compression.

Does anyone else take 1,000 shots before capturing one that's worth showing? Or am I the worst photographer EVER? Don't answer that.

Congratulations to everyone. You all did a great job. Can't wait till next weeks show. :)

Thank you all so much for the votes. I'm truly amazed that my photo ended up at the top of that list especially with all the awesome talent here.

I'll be thinking about a new topic and let y'all know soon.

Not having access to a human model (and refusing to do a self-portrait) I had no choice but to dig through the action figure collection. Being well into Season 3 of Entourage I had to go with our good buddy Aquaman. I figured it's good for a laugh, and am actually surprised it didn't rank dead last! :)

I would have put him in the aquarium, but it sprung a leak a while back so I had to give away all my corals and livestock... he's actually in front of a small waterfall in the backyard koi pond, but the DOF is so shallow you can't even tell.

I did consider setting up reflectors for a bit of fill, but then I thought that was just slightly absurd for a brief backyard action figure photo shoot.

Here are some other pics from the intimate photo shoot:

Does anyone else find one week a little short?

Could we consider either lengthening each contest to two weeks, or failing that, changing the end day to Thursday?

Since I have more time to shoot over the weekend, having a new subject to shoot over the weekend gives me the rest of the week to develop my film (yes, I'm planning on using film for most of this, since I have two decent film cameras, but only a point and shoot digital cam), scan it, and try some simple PS stuff?

I agree with the sugestion to move the deadline to midweek.

I think 1 week is prety good thoguh as I like it beeing a simple fast contest with lots of results. :) 2 weeks would result in procrastinaion, at least on my part.

I agree... I think a week is probably enough (I won't complain if we have longer)... but I think it would be better if the deadline was midweek. It's usually easier to shoot on the weekend and a midweek deadline would give me more time to pick/process.

But if there's a reason it's easier for Jeremy when it wraps on a weekend, that's fine, too.

Chad

Really, you need 1 week for shooting/production and 1 week for judging/commenting = two weeks per contest.

Alternatively, If you want to have a new contest weekly, then the winner could choose the subject TWO weeks forward rather than one, and the new one could start shooting/production while judging/commenting take place.

It''s really the only way since some people only get 1 day a week to do this stuff, and it's not always the same day for everyone.

Does that make sense?

What gives dude... it's not like you're buying a house! Pick something. :)
:undecided I'm so dern indecisive! (I really am)

But I did PM Jeremy yesterday afternoon with an idea for a new topic and I haven't heard anything back from him. I kinda figured he'd set up an official new thread with the new challenge. It doesn't look like he's even logged in since then... maybe the whole thing was exhausting and he's sleeping for the first time in a week! :D Maybe since this weekend will be mostly over before the challenge is officially announced, we can at least go through next weekend.

What I suggested for the topic was "summertime". Take a picture of whatever says summertime to you. It can be on the water, grilling in your yard, mowing your dying grass, whatever...

That will hopefully give you something to be thinking about until there's an official announcement.

Sorry for the delay!

Chad
