I work at home, which is a bigger problem.

You and me both. Working at home is tough. It definitely has its perks but there are traps everywhere. It just makes it easier to F off. It's like being stranded on a deserted island and only having a choice of brussel sprouts or ice cream for food. I mean, for you office types....which would you choose???

I've worked from home for 15 years now, and you definitely have to be more disciplined than you do working in an office -- precisely because you can get away with anything (until it's deadline time or the bills start stacking up). I only joined the board about three weeks ago, after being a casual peruser for about a year before that, and already I have definitely squandered some precious time surfing around, reading and posting. Lately I've tried to limit it to the evenings, and if it's crunch-time, I just don't even log on. Anyway, it's always good to hear from other self-employed types -- who doesn't like validation that they're not the only one having a self-discipline problem??? By the way -- Prarieboy, what did you name the dog? And speaking of dogs -- the structure they add to your day is a big help to staying focused when you work at home -- time everything to occur between the dogwalking...

I've had a German Shepard puppy (Emma) for the last four months now and the walk schedule has worked wonders in terms of my productivity when I'm working from home.

The dogs name. I left you all hanging, sorry. Her name is Roux (roo). This is a very happy member of the family already. I do not think the foster label is current anymore.
I wait for renders for dog walks, and bathroom breaks. I have always been the distracted type. But I work better when my wife is sleeping. So it all works out.

Addicted? Not me. :)

Oy vey! Ive done that, but it doesn't look NEARLY as good on my old Treo 600... Did that earlier tonight in fact when sitting in the reception area at the animal hospital... My dog is sick  But looks like she may get to come home tomorrow or Friday...

Oh, and meant to say... Love the name! Perfect!

OK, do my intermittent yet steady responses to this thread seem indicative of addictive behavior???

All I know is that it gets easier to hide after a while. My big warning signs that I had an addiction to this site were: 1. setting my tool bar to auto hide so it doesn't look like I have anything pulled up 2. putting a mirror on my computer monitor so when someone walks up behind me I can see them approach 3. copy and pasting articles into emails and reading them so it looks like I'm reading an email from a client, but the real warning sign that told me I had a problem was going home at night and practicing my ALT-TAB speed skills...

I always know I was really productive at work when I only have 1 or 2 posts that day.

1. Sneaky... but this doesn't work when they walk-up for you to show them something.:embarasse
2. This is pretty much standard issue at most companies I've worked or visited, but usually it's too late by the time you see them in the mirror. I use it anyway, though.
3. Mail or Word editing is the best way to go, especially if you don't have time to finish your post. Just send it later.

I use all of the tactics above, but I'm still a target.

PC Magazine recently listed a cheap gizmo that might be worthwhile. It was a USB footswitch you hide under your desk to automatically minimize all windows with a tap. Basically it's the same as clicking "Show Desktop" in the Quick Launch Bar.

i already got two warnings that im using to much bandwidth and slowdown the network (downloading all the videos on this forum..haha)

Its good to know how to renew/release ;)

Bandwidth usually gives you away, and regardless of which IP you currently have, most companies still log everything and can get you if they really want to.

Sniffers are quick to catch you, but complete logging/blocking/reporting tools like Websense are what really get you in trouble since they log and trend your entire web experience without you realizing that you've been nicked. Leaving a browser window minimized reads the same as having it active all day. Ouch!

I know what you mean...

Heh heh. My new toy after my old phone started dying last Friday. It's pretty cool. I have Yahoo message me with a mobile alert whenever the master (Jarred) emails me, or I get a DVX PM. Lots of wild software available for this thing.

I think the biggest give away that you're doing something that you shouldn't at work though is turning around everytime you hear someone walking past your cube to see who it is. Hard habit to break, but training your ears to hear people walking up is effective.

David, I can't believe you don't like my mirror trick. I know it's far from perfect, but actually making me more of a guilty person? All the women here have them for legit reasons, so maybe people think I'm a little feminine.
****ing guy you (hawaiin pidgin) you make me laugh, dats funny man. you know it's bad when your lady is calling you to bed......on the phone! i gots to go

Thanks, Prarieboy -- She is doing a lot better, but still in the hospital. The doc says she may get to come home today, but more likely tomorrow. We still don't know exactly what's going on (maybe a tick-related thing), but at least she's improving. Anyway, thanks for thinking of me. (I would insert an emoticon here, but can't seem to find an appropriate one -- anyway, thanks.)

i thought i was the only addict.

Sometimes i try and find time to say hi to my wife between reading posts

One of my favorite lines is, "Alcoholics go to meetings...I'm just a good old-fashioned drunk."
I just gotta figure out the equivalent for DVXUser.

But yeah, a good part of my world is seen in medium gray - Pacific blue - and Navy blue.

Probably not the healthiest point of view but your quote reminds me of another by Frank Sinatra; " I feel sorry for people who don't drink. Because when they get up in the morning, that's the best they're gonna feel all day."

I almost feel sorry for people who don't film. Because when they wake up in the morning, they'll never care about, nor know nothing of, the magic hour.

Beautifully said!
Do you mind if I borrow that? I want my wife to have that put on my tombstone.

This must really mess up your days, since you schedule everything between dog walks.
