dvxuser is a classroom

Charli

cool little "title"
I'll read one thread here, find a reference to something, then BOOM, next thing
I know I've spent two hours researching a certain product, pros/cons, etc.
I can't even surf here anymore without not trying to learn something. Yes, this
is a fun site, but man, sometimes I feel like I'm back in school and I'm suppose to
hand in my homework assignment to one of the moderators.

Last week's lesson on dof, this week, directing, it never ends...

Pop quiz hot shot, does shooting at a lower f stop (smaller number) increase or decrease DOF?

Bonus point for the movie. This is an easy one.

Please put down your pencils and hand your scantron sheet forward.

Ok. Lowering the f-stop will increase your DOF... opening up more will decrease it... creating shallower DOF.

Hmm, a virtual Classroom, I like it. Maybe DVXuser should start somekind of virtual School with actual exams and assignments (eg handing in video footage and marked on technical points), I vote Barry for Principle :)

B-man is correct. But no bonus point.

I was on a shoot in an apartment and I saw a scantron sheet and thought to myself, "Self. It's been a damn long time since you have seen or even heard the word scantron. Weird, hunh? It was such an integral part of my life for so many years."

Hey! Who was that! If the person who did that doesn't come forward. You will all have to write a 10 page paper on chiaroscuro. I'm serious! Was it you Timur? Or maybe it was you Mr. Jack Daniel Stanley. Someone better come forward!

Lowering the F stop actually decreases DOF. Lower numbers indicate a wider aperture but yes, the more "open" the shallower the DoF.

Looks over Ming's shoulder and writes down the answer.

Wow, if we had a virtual school, I'd sign up. But I definitely want my teacher
to be dressed in a superhero costume. Barry could be Wolverine.

Ming gets full credit for a clear answer. But also note that it is most noticable on closeups. For wide shots and objects in the distance changing fstop has less effect on dof.

Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?

After you fail to catch the bus before it goes over 50mph, you get on board and jump a gap in the freeway.
You then loop the signal from a hidden security camera using a (non loopable!) VTR that just happens to be able to tune into the hidden frequency. (Us techies can do this stuff) And then somehow pump that back out so that the bad guy can't see you get everyone off the bus before it rams into and blows up a cargo plane with lord knows how many nameless people on board. (that last bit always bugged me)

Then you go do a really cool computer world movie in slow motion, and 2 sucky follow-up ones in slower motion.
