DVXa Playback and Timecode Problems

I've been a member here for a while now, but I've never posted anything before. Of course as soon as there's a problem the first thing I do is come here and lay it out for you guys. Sorry about that. Maybe this will prompt me to be more involved with the community.

Anyway, here's the situation. I have a DVX100a that I've been using for a few years now. It's got about 140 hours logged on it, and until now I've never had any problems. On Wednesday I went to shoot a little video with some friends. I grabbed a tape I thought I had used last week, popped it in the camera to see if it was cued to the right spot, and was surprised to see that there appeared to be no footage on the tape. This confused me because I had just used it to shoot about 20 minutes the week before. I was already short on time, so I decided that the tape must be bad and went to the store to get some more tapes. Got the tapes, came back, shot 20 seconds of test stuff and tried to play it back. Same thing. Blue screen, timecode frozen (looks like this: TC*00:00:00:00), no audio. But I can hear the tape physically moving in the camera.

I tried the tape from last week in an old Canon ZR45 I have, and the tape played back seemingly fine. I imported it into FCP and saw that the audio was not synced up with the video. I tried this again with another tape I shot recently and had the same problem. Audio and video were not matched up. I use the Canon to import stuff sometimes, and this hasn't been an issue before.

And that's where I am now. I looked for anything online describing a similar problem and found an article from 2004. At about the same time these two guys' cameras did the same thing. They didn't know each other, and had never met. One guy figured out that if he used the "print to tape" export option (in FCP), that he could reinstate the Timecode, and then use the tape. That process doesn't really seem like a good fix to me. And nothing has been posted on it since. So I feel like I'm at a loss.

My equipment/specs are below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

DVX100a
• Got it in early 2005, around March.
• 139 Hours Logged.
• I try and take good care of it. I have two Petrol cases, a 'gym bag' and a backpack. It spends much of it's time snug between thick pieces of foam padding.
• Usually shoot "Squeeze" with the Scene File dial on F5 for 24p.
• Using Panasonic DVM60 tapes. Not the Masters (DVM63).

My computer is a 2005 PowerMac G5
Dual 2.0GHz PPC
2GB RAM
Final Cut Studio (FCP 5)

Thanks again.

I hope it's that simple. It was actually something that was suggested in the other thread that I mentioned. One of the guys' cameras was brand new from the factory though, and at least in his case I doubt it was dirty heads. I realize mine is hardly new. So yeah, maybe it is the problem. I've read that head cleaners can sometimes do more harm than good though. Any suggestions?
