DVX200 Test footage I wanted to share.

Hello All,

Fellow DVX'er here! Just wanted to share some out of the box, no tweaking, no luts, bare bones test footage with you guys. I've been a Panasinic guy since 2002 with the DVX100, HMC150 (still my fave run and gun cam), and now the DVX200. I took the camera out to get used to the controls, feel etc., and I was quite blown away with what I was able to get right out of the box. Here's a quick 1:45 clip of some of the strong suits this camera provides. I was telling my FS7 friends that it's like carrying an array of lenses in the palm of my hand. Very impressed! The clip demonstrates the bokeh, zoom lens abilities, shallow DOF. Nothing fancy here, just me running around with the cam snagging shots here and there. Compression sucks in general but I tried to leave it in UHD for vimeo. Some screenshots below of some of my favorite shots. Vimeo upload was 2160 24p.

On my computer each of your links are broken. I see no link to a Vimeo video.

Thanks Mapper. For some reason the embedded Vimeo link doesn't show up on mobile devices, not sure what happenend with the attachments. I'm new to the forum so maybe someone else has some ideas?

Ah, yes I was using my iPad. Now that I'm on my laptop the link to the Vimeo video does show up.

I have to say that factory scene file 4 is probably my least favorite of all of the scenes but had you not told us which preset you were using, I wouldn't have guessed that it was 4. I think it looks really good despite the reasons I'm not a fan of the file. The only time that I really noticed what I don't care for about that scene is at 0:35. I think the shadow areas of the trees would have been darker using some of the other scenes. I like a little more contrast but that's just a personal preference. Maybe I need to give it more of a chance.

Be sure to load the GH4 SCN4 file that was just released by Panasonic. I really like that scene under most conditions and I think part of the reason is the color rendering and contrast that it seems to have.

It's nice to finally see some video from the DVX200 that people are proud to share. It's been a bumpy ride for about the last 6 months but I think we're now going to see a lot more people buying the camera based on the image quality that we are now seeing from it. As I had mentioned in the past, the DVX200 is one of the first new cameras released that You Tube wasn't flooded with excited new owners posting sample videos from the camera. Looks like that's starting to change. I just hope that most of the early adopters are following along and updating their firmware to get the most out of the camera. The camera has really become what I was expecting it to be after nearly 6 months of owning it.

How about indoor footage? When I had the camera for a day, I was not impressed with indoor shooting and the lack of exposure (mud) in the shadow areas. Could not dial it out either. Had to use Hi Sens just to equal my PX270 for exposure at no/low gain.

This was shot inside with a small LED panel mounted on the camera. I think it holds up pretty well even at ISO 2000 and not using high sensitivity mode.

Thanks for posting. Yes, holding up pretty well. I am just disappointed that the DVX-200 is not an AJ level camera and meant to be a sibling to the PX cameras. Even with all of the image controls I just could not get an image as good as my PX270. I can see the shadows in your video as being almost black. Just reminds me too much of DSLR type footage but that is a personal thing.

That's funny regarding Scn4. I preferred it because it did not crush the blacks, leaving me a little more latitude in post to grade later. But yes, typically I do prefer higher contrast, making things pop, I just like being able to control it later. - There are still a few little things I am trying to figure out with the DVX, and I can imagine the early adopters have had it rough. For instance, there seems to be a shift towards "green" but i haven't been able to figure out whether its coming from the camera or the LCD/EVF, I just got a new 4k monitor and I have yet to calibrate that as well. Works in progress.

I think the Vimeo compression is affecting the shadows and darkening them a bit. One of the reasons I decided to use the SCN4 was that it didn't crush too much, but it definitely looks different on Vimeo than on my 4k mon.

I had a few questions on your tests.
I have downloaded the Original and 4K MP4 file from Vimeo.
What ISO was this shot at?
What did you mean by SCN4 Flat? Maybe i am misunderstanding that. I usually think of LOG with the term Flat but you had SCN4. Did you have some Gamma setting different?
The footage looks noisy to me (as does my own DVX200 footage) so i am just trying to see what others are doing.
Looks like the 1.65 firmware with the negative gain might fix some of this for me.

Xno, This was shot at 0db gain, I am not exactly sure what that would translate to iso on this camera, Mr. Green could probably answer that. :) As for SCN4 flat, I meant that I shot with Scene 4 setting un modified from the factory. - I can tell you that the footage is clear as day on my 4k monitor out of the camera and even out of the NLE, but the second I went t compress it for upload to vimeo that screen shot you referenced above degrades completely. That shot above is a long gop nightmare, but the DVX actually handled it beautifully. The noise your seeing happened after compression and not in the camera. Hope this answered your questions.

Thanks for the info.
After these last couple of firmware updates, i think this camera is finally somewhat useable. The reason i was asking about your footage is because I was getting way too much noise (In my opinion) for a camera at ISO 500 in daylight and way too much at ISO1000 indoors and in low light. I shoot a decent amount in low light and i was told it was a great low light camera which it is not in my opinion.
Just wanted to see what others are getting out of this camera and whether or not it is just my camera or something i am doing differently, etc.

xno, I've heard it's not the best low light cam around, that the fs7 and larger sensor cams are much better for this, but you cannot find a better run and gun fixed lens solution anywhere near the cost of the dvx and the low light capabilities can either be dealt with in post if need be. However I am sure that as I get better with the camera, the footage will improve. I'm shooting my aunts wedding as a first real outting with the dvx and I am sure there are going to be some low light situations to tackle. I'll get back to you guys then. Best! Dave.
