DVX200 Head Phone Mode

Maybe I'm just blind but can someone point me in the right direction - I'm looking for the H/PHONE MODE. I saw a thread where Barry mentioned the ability to change the audio that you hear in your headphones from LIVE to RECORDED sound or visa versa. There seems to be a little delay in the headphones, I think the camera might be set to RECORDED sound and I need to change it to LIVE. Pretty sure I went through all the menus and I didn't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

The Delay is a real pain in the A#% , I have 2 of these cameras and it's a Major Problem with them, I can't use them at a live event (IMA) , (have to use the Sony EX3, ) the Deley is 5 frames, 2 or 3 is aceptable , anything over is noticeable and looks crap . So yes the Delay is the and it's just a pain, hope Panasonic sorts it out one day.

I'll check my camera later when I'm back home from work.

But, you should be monitoring the recorded sound since that's the sound that's....you know...being recorded.

There is an inherent delay with DVX200 because it is basically a powerful computer with a camera built around it and that computer takes a noticeable fraction of a second to see the action, process it, compress it and record it onto the media. It's astonishing how much work the computer is doing to squeeze the quality of image out of the camera that it can...it's also astonishing that the delay is at least 4-5 frames and either 1. not faster, 2. not slower. It's great because you get a lot of camera for under $5k, but you also get a camera that isn't as quick as others with fewer options or more expensive cameras with similar ones. Regardless, I use DVX200 for live work all the time and it's just fine.

The delay is noticeable when I'm looking at a fast moving object live and the camera's monitor/s, sure I can see the delay. When I'm shooting with my face buried in the equipment, no I don't see the delay. I just react and my ability to operate a camera is pretty accurate most of the time. So, the slight delay doesn't bother me and no client has ever brought it up. It doesn't show up in the deliverables as everything is synced internally. That is the audio that needs to be monitored live. Listening to live audio unprocessed from the video with a delay intact would probably be weird, and as I'm sure there's a menu item that lets you have the choice as Barry stated, I don't remember seeing it, nor is it in the manual. I'm going to suppose the ability came in a firmware update that makes the manual obsolete since shipping.

As I said, I will check my DVX200 when I come home later. For my purposes, I like the setting the way it is.

Anyway, it's just scratch since I usually use a separate audio recorder for important stuff.

Okay, you're not blind -- I've been working on The UX90 & UX180 Book, and it has the H/PHONE MODE menu item (as have pretty much all Panasonics since the DVX100B). But the DVX200 doesn't have that menu item. Instead, it has two audio output jacks -- the headphone jack, which always sends the audio out with no delay, and the AUDIO OUT jack, which delays the audio to match the video.

So if you're monitoring live audio, you almost certainly want to use the headphone jack to avoid the echo. If, instead, you want to see the video sync'd with the audio, you could put the headphones in the AV OUT jack. So, effectively, the DVX200 has the same functionality as the H/PHONE MODE menu, but without needing a menu item for it.

Thanks so much Barry, thats what I was doing, I was listening with the headphones using the AUDIO OUT JACK. How bout that, using the headphones with the HEADPHONE JACK,what a concept. Next time I'll just read what it says on the camera. Boy I feel stupid. Thanks again.
