DVX200 gets some love in the press....

I'm planning a documentary in the Cook Islands next year, and trying to decide on gear. It's down to the DVX or the C300. After reading that little article it pretty much swayed me towards the DVX. Even though it's bigger, not having to mess with lenses and having better batteries (IDX big batts) and knowing I'm going to have to shoot "correspondents style" with little to no shot prep off beaches, native canoes, jungle, small planes, etc. I really think it's the tool for the job. Even though I'll hand carry the cameras on the flight over, once there I'm pretty much living out of two pelican cases so I really need to decide on the most versatile gear. Local shoots I can pack my van full of crap "I may need"...; this is really forcing me to pare down to the essentials (not too used to doing that...). Wish it did a bit better low light (the Canon's trump card), but I think I can make it work with a couple of Ice Lights LED's...

Yep. If your shooting outside it is a good fit but dim indoors might be a challenge. I would rent or borrow one first before committing.

I actually already have both cameras. Each for different purposes. But the frustration comes when trying to use one in a condition the other is better suited for! However, taking them both just wouldn't be practical so I'm trying to figure out the best set of compromises for this upcoming shoot. I'm still leaning towards the DVX and the main camera, and perhaps a Canon DSLR as a #2 though I really don't like shooting video on a DSLR I think it would work better in some low light situations. I've got time, so I'll probably do a bunch of tests and see if it's worth it. The big limitation is baggage. Regardless, lights & sound stuff have to make it and not taking the Canon's would save considerably on lenses, rigs, and overall hassle in the field. But I can fly the Canon's on my Ronin-M and they are better in low light... but... but... yeah, decisions, decisions....
