DVX200 blowing highlights too easily (frame grab pic in thread) vs HMC150

Hi guys,

Took the new DVX200 to a nightclub that for the past 5 years Ive covered on Halloween weekend. Same club, same lights, same on board LED lamp. Only difference was the camera.

I'd tried to match scene file data as much as possible though the HMC150 only had a handful of options compared to the DVX200.

What I found in the club was that using the LED lamp everything seemed off. The highlights would blow out instantly on the screen whereas with the HMC150 I could have the LED turned up far far more and no issue, almost as if the DVX was obeying a different inverse square law regarding light collection.

Here is a pixel for pixel grab of 2 frames from the DVX and 2 frames from last years project HMC150 files - no correction on any.

Any ideas what I may have done wrong? I really want to love the new camera but its like buying a new model of your existing car that goes faster and looks better but the heater controls are either arctic cold or cremation hot :(

Thanks folks,

Rikki

I don't have an answer for you but I have had the same issues in the past. I am curious to see what kind of feedback you'll get. What scene file did you use on the DVX200?

Barry, do you have a particular scene file (1.81) you use for outdoor high contrast situations? If so, did you tweak any of the default settings?

I ended up using the new Pana scene 4 download and stuck with it - seems to be all better now though was annoying as the HMC was so graceful with it

Actually the DVX looks better than the 150 which is compessing the skin and making it plastic.. but the DVX looks 1-2 stops over exposed.

Assuming your onboard LED is the key but you dont want to stop down and lose the ambient try turning down the LED or sticking some diff on it.
