Dvx100b with 850 hours?

well $1150 + (estimate of) $400 for new head replacement
and you got a brand new dvx100b for less then 1600 and they sell for at least 1800 on the marketplace

but regarding your question my friend has a dvx100a with over 1000 on it, i think hes around 1050 hours and it was still kicking fine, until he fell on it filming snowboarding and the eyepiece and lcd got mangled
still works though and he used it for capturing its entire life too (which is a no-no)

it all comes down to how it was treated, theres a huge difference between 850 hours done purely in a studio, or 850 hours in front of a beach, or in the rain

if you get it and buy new heads, keep the reciept as proof and i would say take a picture of the hours meter with the date in the picture to prove to people when it got the heads replaced and would be better to sell it again afterwards

Good Luck

i wouldn't do it. for what it's worth, i'm selling mine with 95 hours in a few months, and am expecting around $1800-$1900. that's based on other sales in the dvxuser marketplace.

$1150? I'd do that in a new york minute, provided that it is actually in great working condition. The heads should last for at least 1,000 hours, and probably more like 2,000. Budget for a head replacement, but don't actually go out and do it until you need to. You might find that, depending on how much work you do with it, you may never need to spend that extra money.

The camera is in good condition with minor cosmetic blemishes from general use(no major scratches or anything). Other than that its perfect besides the high hours. I think im gonna go for it. Thanks for the advice guys.

Good luck, Colin. Just think of this: On pages 100 and 101 of Barry Green's DVX book, Barry says that you can connect a cheap miniDV camcorder to the DVX100B by firewire and record on the tape in the cheap camera without even having a tape in the drive of the DVX100B. That way, you can use a cheap camera as a slave for recording and capturing without wear on the DVX heads. I tried it using my PV GS320 and it worked like a charm. I just threw the little camera over my shoulder on a sling and went at it. The data on the tape is exactly as it would have been if it had been recorded on the DVX100B. Just something for you to consider.

I wonder would this extend your ability to capture two uninterupted hours on tape instead of one, by using the small camera for the first hour and the DVX for the second? Or would you need to stop recording to unplug the aux. camera?

Couldn't you just start recording on the slave, then after an hour, press record on the dvx and it would do the second hour?

Actually, yes. I just went back over that chapter in Barry's book and, with the DVX in CHAIN mode and the slave in VCR mode, the DVX records on its internal tape first, until it's almost full, then automatically switches to the slave. While it is using the slave, you can swap out the tape in the DVX. Acording to Barry, you can record footage indefinitely using this method, without missing a single frame.
