dvx100b-why does the 16:9 display crop off top & bottom of image in squeeze mode

sorry for the long title & mini rant but it kind of explains my query - the 100b is supposed to show the full frame of what you capture in the viewfinder & lcd screen - this seems to be the case when shooting 4:3, but when using squeeze mode & making the display aspect 16:9 i find that the black bar letterbox on the display actually hides some of the image that is actually captured, so when i output to 16:9 dvd there is more image shown top & bottom (i.e. the black bars come down too far top & bottom on the dvx display).
This makes it impossible to frame correctly & has screwed some of my shots because the mic can be seen dipping in & out of view on the dvd version, but they are not there when i was filming or when i play footage back through the dvx lcd screen. Why have they made the black bars too close together when viewing 16:9 aspect? I can see that its quite a lot cut off when using the 4:3 display for squeeze mode & i feel this is the only way i can now trust my framing but its quite annoying as the image is now stretched when filming. What is the point of having the display in 16:9 if it isn't trully what your capturing & therefore not actually 16:9 ratio.
Am i doing something wrong because I've searched & searched but not come across anyone else mentioning this?
Any help would be very much appreciated

You're not doing anything wrong. You observation is correct. In 4:3 LCD mode, you see the whole image underscanned. When you switch to 16:9 LCD, you actually get an overscanned image and lose part of the image. This wasn't the intent of the mode, and Jan from Panasonic has been made aware through this forum on a number of occassions, but this isn't the RED camera, you can't just upgrade the firmware and fix the bug.

So, you need to bear this in mind if you use the 16:9 LCD mode. It actually shows you about what you'd see on a 16:9 CRT. A quick way to check for stray items in the frame is to press the MENU button, which temporaryily switches to underscanned 4:3 mode. Or, just keep the LCD in 4:3 mode and learn to live with the distorted image. I came from a GS400, so I was used to the distorted image and it doesn't bother me.

hey thanks joshua, glad its not just my imagination but a bit of a bummer there's no fix. lesson learned i guess, going to have to view the distorted image if using 16:9 again, doesn't help my present predicament mind, better get back to cropping out those cheeky mic shots.

lol we had the same issue on My 100A when I first got it and used squeeze .
I now dip the mic into the shot and then pull up about 12 inches or what is required .
Not an issue since .
