Sorry to bring this up as I'm sure its been discussed before here, but I am trying to convince a production to switch from an XL2 to DVX100B, mainly because I hate shooting with the Canon.
Just on a technical level though, how do you think the picture & sound quality compare between the 2 cameras - sharpness, noise, audio quality, lowlight sensitivty, contrast etc.
Also won't the DVX give me a better wider all around versatile field of view for handheld reality type shooting?

The shoot is 4:3, 60i vanilla.

I don't have any of the cameras, but from reading I'd summarise by saying.

The Xl2 is a little sharper, especially in 16:9 (the DVX can't do that without an adapter)

The low light of the XL2 shows little noise at all. Very clean.

Yes the DVX has a wider lens, but it doesn't have as much telephoto if that matters to you.

DVX will accept line level (0 dBu) into the XLR's if you're taking from a pro mixer. It's not +4dBu like the pro stuff but you might get away without a pad.

DVX lens has more control for repeatable focus and zoom.

The 100B has an underscanning LCD. so that you can see the ENTIRE image in the LCD unlike most other consumer level LCD's where you lose some area.

In fact, it actually has an LCD, the XL2 doesn't.

You say you're shooting 4:3. In that case the chip size of the XL2 is about 1/4" so a little more of the shot will be in focus than the DVX at 1/3"

I haven't seen a sound test of the XL2, but the DVX when tested before the XL2's release had the best sound in this class of camera.

At a guess I'd say because the XL2 has smaller pixels in the same size chip as the DVX, it'd be a little less sensitive. IN fact the 100b adds another 6dB of S/N AFAIK.

The DVX is also more light senstive. the XL2 may be a touch cleaner, but the DVX is a stop faster.

I'd say get the DVX but don't want to start a bitchfest about how I'm not objective

So get the Sony

John the TREO 650 has a sick camera mode that would own the SONY.

Thats VGA man.... 800X600 Beats the crap out of a DVX..... The pixel count is the proof.

ok mikko just for you.

PLus i hate when peple ***** about the HVX....

Dude CAsio ( the watch compny) make s a 8 megapixel, digital camera... at the same time there is a 3 megapixel DIgital SLR CAnon..... GUESS which i would rather have......

P.S. - Did you actually quote yourself in your signature line? And besides...Did anyone else here make films prior to the computing era or am I alone on this one? It seems it is just a bunch of kids with computers and a camera these days. I am in my 20s, but I still spent 10+ years editing pre-computers even though I've had computers my whole life. Thats why I loved my design school...you werent alowed to use a computer until your junior year...you had to learn the real way before you got to just click somthing and have it done for you.

didn't you just finish telling me not to be a jerk?

i'm 31. i learned to edit on vhs decks, then 16mm workprints on steenbecks and KEMs. i've even conformed a negative. now, i cut on computers. Avid Adrenalines, specifically. and get paid handsomely to do so. i bet my penis is bigger than yours too. but personally, i think it is a mistake to be hung up on the tools your using when that energy could be focused on form and content.
