DVX100b Vs. Canon 60D

Well, I finally have the opportunity to get a decent dollar for my DVX100B.
I've been looking at DSLR rigs since they seem to be the most affordable.
I have taken into account the audio capture issue, the CMOS shake, etc.
I also haven't used my DVX much anymore.

I've gotten an offer for $1000 for the DVX100B. It's been posted on Craigslist for a while and this was the best offer I received.

Since a Canon 60D starts at around $1000, I was thinking it would be a decent purchase.

I know people keep comparing DSLR's vs DVX's and it seems that people don't ditch their DVX.

I'm looking for someone who has fully given up on their DVX for a DSLR and want to know the pros in doing so.

Thanks!

First off, if you do narrative filmmaking, I would say DSLR all the way. If you do event stuff, like weddings, news gathering, documentary stuff. I would keep your current cam, or sell it and buy an xha1, hvx200, Although the dvx100b looks pretty damn good when uprezed to HD. There was a video the other day on grafitti that was beautiful, and was shot with your cam.

The dslr's are good if you want the ability to shoot with a shallow DOF, BUT SUCK FOR FAST PANS, AND TILTS. They have some terrible moire, and aliasing issues. So you need to know the limitations, which isn't all that hard to figure out. Plus, you need glass, a stabalizer, recorder for audio. And more glass, and more glass. Well, you can get a decent lens to cover a wide range of coverage. But collecting glass IS ADDICTIVE AND EXPENSIVE. In fact there's not many people that buy dslr's that don't get sucked into the addiction, it's like crack.

Only you know what your needs are, But if I were you, and set on getting a newer HD cam. I would get the GH2 over any dslr right now. It looks so damn filmic to me, even more so than what I have seen come from the AF101. I just love the look of the image. Plus it has hdmi out, audio levels, decent onboard mic, swival lcd,can use almost any lens on it. and it's relatively cheap. good luck with your new purchase. :)

This is pretty much what I did. I sold my old DVX100B on ebay and bought a Canon 60D. There are definitely limitations to using a DSLR as compared to shooting on a prosumer video camera, but I think the image quality of the DSLR makes up for them. Like maranfilms said, you will definitely be needing to get a few accessories to make you DSLR work as well as the DVX - audio recording system, lenses, a follow focus, etc. For what I need to use the camera for - mostly short narrative films - it works excellently. Quick list of what I find the pros to be for making the switch.

PROS

- NO MORE TAPES!
- Beautiful image quality - HD
- Wide variety of lenses can be used
- Physically smaller and more versatile
- Works great for Still images as well as video!

Thanks guys!
Say, how much did you end up selling your DVX for?
I keep trying for $1200 on craigslist, but keep getting offers like $600-$800.

Maybe I should just settle for something less?

I am thinking about going from my dvx to a dslr also... I talked to some people today and they said most dslr's only shoot for like 10 minutes at a time, but the Sony A33 doesnt get as hot and can record for longer times (about an hour). Is this true? I do some weddings and that would be a big selling point for me. Any downsides to the a33 compared to the 60d or t2i?

Look at the gh2...they don't overheat at all.....at least my gh1 never did. Less moire and aliasing than the Canon's and Sonys. They improved high iso on it as well.

...Any downsides to the a33 compared to the 60d or t2i?

The A33 might have longer a longer recording time but there definitely seems to be some downs to it.
It seems to have very limited recording options. 60i recording output to 30p? I thought we were done with that, and 30p is your only option. Where the 60d records 24p, and you also have the option to record in 60p.
The A33 doesn't appear to manual audio, the 60d does.
The A33 looks like it has a sharper screen but the 60d's looks like its more versatile.
I own the 60d and am incredibly happy with it, its a great camera. So far there have been no reported problems with overheating with the 60d.

i sold a DVX100a w/century .06x ($430 new price) & 1.6x ($800 new price) w/zoe thumb controller about one and a half years ago and got $1,600.00. a friend of mine just sold his DVX100a with thumb controller to the same guy that bought mine and got 1k.

i personally think $800 is not a horrible price to get but i do think $600 seems too low. i think its still sort of worth $1,000.00 but there are a lot of people that know they can buy something more contemporary in that price range and grow on a system with accessories. to pay 1k or more i think are people that are already invested into staying SD for awhile longer and/or looking for a "mate" to their already owned DVX100 which is what happened to the guy that bought mine and my friends.

good luck
david
