DVX100b Untimely Demise

I'm hoping someone might read this and be able to share a similar experience. My DVX100b was purchased in May 2007. In May 2008 I began getting the dreaded SReel Lock error. I searched many forums and although there were lots of instances of this problem, nobody seemed to have a definitive answer. I took my camera in and they want $690 to replace the whole tape transport mechanism. The camera has 560 hours on the head, has been babied and only used by me. Is this acceptable?

These things happen - where did you send it for service? Digitron? Ask the repair tech if this is common and call the people you bought the unit form and also ask Panasonic nicely if they have a special program for this kind of thing. That's all you can do...
