DVX100b to NLE to DVD Workflow

Can't thank you enough PerroneFord for taking the time to help me out with this, can't wait to hear what the Master has to say, for real.

I'm stoked

It's been a while since I've done DVX footage. I think 5 or 6 months. But the basic rules are the same for ANY footage.

1. Shoot as cleanly as possible. Good light, good focus, no super strong looks in the camera that you may need to undo in post.

2. Make the decision whether to edit the native codec (most commonly done), or whether you want to transcode to a more robust codec. If I am going to do a lot of rendering to the video, or do a lot of color work, I'll transcode to something good. I tend to prefer 10bit codecs but I don't know any good ones for SD video off the top of my head. So a robust 8-bit codec is good. I think I standardized on Avid's excellent codecs after a lot of experimentation.

3. Once you've finished cutting and grading, render out to an excellent master. Again, I like the Avid codecs here, but there are other good choices.

4. If you are going to burn a DVD, use a GOOD Mpeg2 codec. The Mainconcept mpeg2 codec is good and it's what I used. I haven't had to do any DVDs in quite some time, but I use Sorensen Squeeze now as my compressor and it gives me a ton of good options. If you are going to do a VBR (variable bit rate) encode, ALWAYS do at least a 2-pass. Honestly, I prefer to do CBR encodes at the highest bitrate that will fit on the disk. If I am going to have to compress too much, then I'll do VBR multipass encoding.

5. The DVD burning software should NOT recompress the footage after step 4. It should just be doing a burn to DVD. If it does recompress at this stage you are losing a LOT of quality. It would be better to actually load your master into the DVD burning program and let it compress THAT instead.

Getting good results is a matter of taking your time, starting with good sources, using high quality codecs to minimize loss, and having a solid workflow.

Wow! awesome, thanks for all that PerroneFord, so good of you to take time out of your busy life and impart some wisdom. There were many things I wasn't aware of. I think my problem WAS re compression at the DVD stage, amongst other things lol, gotta figure out how not to do that. Lot's of great information in there, lot's to think about.

I been fooling around with a new NLE, well new to me anyway, it's called EDIUS, it's so different from what I been using, it enables effects in real time, plus mixing and matching different frame rates ,and frame sizes, not that I do that a lot, but its nice to be able to do that. Have you used this program before? I'm sure you already know of it, just wondering what you think of it.

Again, DUDE, thanks a mill for all your feedback, you been a great help to me, seriously.
