DVX100B Repair Pricing ?

I recently sent my DVX100B in for repairs. I shipped it to an authorized Panasonic repair center. The estimate was $1031 to replace the VTR Main Board and Top Connect Board. Does anyone know if this is a normal price for parts and labor?

Thanks for anything,

JEH

I would get the camera back, then purchase another (used) that has been taken care of.
At $1031.00 you have exceeded the repair limit of the machine based on an average value of $1250.00 for a used unit in good condition. If this was a vehicle, the insurance company would have "totaled" it. You might be able to sell the old one in the condition it is in to off set he cost of the replacement. Good news is you will probable gain some more gear with the used one as well (lens, bag, batteries, etc.)

It is up to you, but this is how I would handle it.

Movielighter's right. At that point you will end up essentially having 'negative equity' in the camera; figure your depreciated value of what you paid for the camera just prior to it needing the repair plus the repair cost itself and you're over what the camera is worth in working order.

He's also right about picking up additional 'free' gear with the purchase of a used camera; when I bought my DVX100a, the seller included all of the original kit plus an extra battery, then threw in a Pelican 1610 case with the divider kit; that's almost a $500 extra right there.

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies. I would just get it back and get another 100B however...I bought my current one not to long ago used and now it needs $1000 plus in repairs. I would be extremely hesitant to buy another used DVX no matter the condition. Dishing the money out for the repairs would leave me having invested more into the camera than makes good sense. But I would also be left with a DVX that I know is in great shape, due to the repairs, as opposed to taking a sellers word and no warranty on another used one.

Or, if I could, just get an HMC 150.

The HMC150 would be pretty nice.

I have bought 7 used cameras on ebay and craigslist and never had a problem with any of them. Look for someone who took care of them, usually this means that they bought "extras" to go with it. Ask about "any" damage or probelms. Honest people will be up front with you and also give you a short term to check the camera out. I cna get about 2.5 for the price of 1 and a "load" of extras.

Another note, I purchased a refurb from Canon (HV30) last month. Out of the box it would not recognize timecode, or record. After being without it 4weeks now, my replacement should be here today.

They are all going to go bust at some point, if you get a brand new one and spend that much $$$, get the extended warranty. A waste of money in most cases, but a 4-5 year term means that the camera will be in your hands and ready this long. Get the drop coverage also if you can afford it, might come in handy!

It is all a crap shoot.
