dvx100b marker/spotmeter. Why two boxes?

I got my dvx100b recently and have just now started to play with the more in depth features. I was playing around with the marker/spotmeter and I was wondering, Why are there two boxes when it only really looks at the smaller one? Also, why is the smaller box off center instead of being right in the middle?

Thanks.

its an interesting question, My guess is the bigger box is for reference inside the film's frame. At least thats how I use it. Say I want to sneak peek at the IRA level of a highlight/shadow on my subject face, but I want to sneak over to it without disturbing my viewers notice. I want to take a peak and then refame the face to original cam position... so I use the box this way- keeping in mind the orginal position. Otherwise I have no idea. Im not talking zebra here but exact IRA

Hi VZ, i also am wondering that very same thing.

bwest, wouldn't it be the same thing if the small box were centered? Instead the small box is off-centered which i'm not sure why either.

I'm wondering if the reading you get isn't a ratio of light levels between the two?
Although I'm not sure that makes any sense. I would think a relative quantity would not be useful as an absolute quantity would.

Bigger box = a framing guide. Smaller box = the area that's actually being sampled for the marker's spotmeter readout.

Don't know why it's not centered within the bigger box.

Thanks Barry for clearing that up. So basically just point the little box where you want the reading to come from. Still dont know why panasonic decided to set it off center but Im sure there was some reason ().
