DVX100B - Higher than DV quality?

Hello! First post ftw! :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Scenario: DVX100b, Used for a church for quite sometime. Records weekend service that is Podcasted, as well as sends a direct Svideo feed to "family room" with live video.

Observation: The Svideo feed tends to look higher quality (less blurry, pixelated, no color degradation) than the DV record that is captured.

Question: Is there a way to record higher quality than the Mini DV tape? Either through the firewire, or through the svideo, I don't really care. It just seems to me that DV quality is to blame, particularly for the color degradation and pixelation. It seems to me that the picture quality in the camera is fantastic! But I just wish DV was a bit better.

Thanks for any tips or thoughts!

What are you watching the DV output on, and what are you watching the s-video output on? That might account for some of the differences you're seeing...

Interesting observation.

But I think if the s-video output was any higher resolution, the DVX community would have been all over it a long time ago.

You need to watch both on the exact same monitor.
Then if you still think there's a difference, capture the s-video into a computer ans see how it plays back.
(Can one even capture an s-video signal without degrading it?)

The only possible difference would be that it's possible the S-video output is normal broadcast standards (basically 4:2:2 colorspace), but it's unlikely. I'm not familiar with the signal chain to know if the output comes before or after the DV compression.

It displays on a LCD projector in a theater. The DV recording isn't horrible, I'm just seeing if anyone knew a way to squeak a bit more out of the DVX. It's very possible that the svideo is analog straight from the cam before the DV encoding, at least that's the impression I got. But recording that externally isn't really a practical option.

OK, let's get into this.
What exactly is needed to record s-video into a firewire device?
Can we find out in some way exactly weather or not the s-video output is before or after the DV encoding?

I'm very curious.

Hi! To answer your question, we need to know as much detail as possible about how you watch the s-video out, and how you watch the DV version. Do you watch them both on the same projector? What's the playback device for the DV?

Or, here's a plan: Connect the camera to the projector via s-video. Look at the live image, while recording ro tape. Then, play back the tape through the camera. This will unambiguously demonstrate the relative quality of the live s-video and DV encoding....
