DVX100b - First Shots

Well, here we go. My first ever video utilising a DVX100b. Actually, my first time ever using any DVX.
In fact, this is the first video I've ever shot on a camera, aside for home movies with crappy JVCs and such.

HEY! There are are no thematic or cinematic elements to this video - just test footage with a song thrown over it.
I'm not going for artistic quite yet.
More videos to come - I promise they will be good.

NOTE: This was edited with windows movie maker
(I know, how much more basic could i get?).
It is not compressed, so it is actually quite large.
In my opinion, the end is my favorite part -
but please, if you don't want to, don't waste your time downloading it.

EDIT - THE res is large when downloaded, but looks best if it is smaller.
ALSO! SORRY ABOUT HOW SHAKY THE CAMERAMAN (me) IS. ALSO, SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK
And yes, no CCs this time. Not until i get a decent NLE! THIS FOOTAGE IS AS RAW AS YOU CAN GET!

Synopsis (In case you're that bored):
I went to Seattle for Christmas, which is when i got my DVX.
I just decided to ride around shooting various scenery and such.
The best day was the last , which was the only day the sun came out.
This is at the end of the video.

Be as harsh as possible - the only way for me to get better is to learn what
I'm doing wrong, and how to do it right.

Thanks

hey man, there's no need for us to be harsh. that was pretty good for your first time shooting with a DVX100. my first time was about a month ago. anyways, the shakyness... you'll get over it. it is pretty hard since its bigger than any JVC. Movie Maker is pretty cheap. consider getting something worth while like Vegas or Premier. i recommend getting Vegas for now, then trying out different programs and get the one you like. i know movie maker doesnt have it but i'm just reminding you... color corection. no matter what, you always need some color correction. even the slitest to make at least more film like. what you had was ok. it didnt need any CC (color correction). home videos dont need any. white balance is also very important. when ever you switch location, white balance

hey man, dont get frustrated if people dont reply to your threads. it takes time. my first thread (two months ago or so)got locked down for some reason. ever sice then i never posted another thread and wont until i get some videos on my website.

Lucky;

Oh yeah, man i know. I've been hanging around here for awhile, it's just so much more different than just looking at others' footage. I just got ancy because it was my own footage. And yeah, I'm just recovering from the blow of having to pay for a third of the DVX for Christmas ($1100 is a hefty blow to a 16 year old's wallet). My next step is getting Vegas, definitely. Thanks for the tips as well. I made sure to read up on this camera as much as possible - the more background, the more experience I'll start of with. It's actually all quite simpler than I had once suspected. I have to admit, this camera intimidated me the first time I had started learning about it. I appreciate your feedback!

Haha. Movie Maker is more than cheap... it's FREE.

PS - The edit function works wonders.

maybe he just wants more posts (no editing posts for him!)

I've shot stuff from the passenger seat of a car, and boy is it tough to keep it still.
no worries on that, although i would have liked to see more things in focus.
keep it up! are you doing something for sci-fest?

...I kind of thought of that possibility too. The whole post spamming thing; but come on, we were guilty of it at one time or another.

Here's the thing - If I could have one genre that I would never make a movie about, it would probably be science fiction... simply because I have no visionary skills in the field.

Yeah, I went a little trigger happy with the manny-zoom. Sorry, but I love experimenting with DOF, haha. Thanks for the feedback, 'cause yeah, shooting in the car was pretty tough, but I still had fun while learning what the hell I'm doing. No better way, right?

what do you mean? i dont get it

Post after post after post. Simply go to your first post, and select the "modify" tab. Presto! Now you save space!

Don't worry - you'll learn all the nifty features soon enough.

Yikes! You shouldn't point your camera directly at the sun like that. Well... It was setting...

Keep on practicing shooting stuff then move onto some short films. If you don't have a mic make a silent short.

I know I know I know! I didn't mean to point it at the sun! As soon as I did it I remembered reading that here.

Thanks NO CASH. I prefer no audio except for music. I find it makes the movie more cohesive than it would be with those bothersome environmental sounds, and voices, etc.

Not bad at all, LSG - you had some good footage and some good cuts... I like your choice in music for you shots, so it's apparent that you got the goods... keep it up, my friend... you need so more in focus shots.

Learn to focus on the subject matter.

The driving was fun for about :15 and then got really old. I'm glad I hung around for the tree and sunset however.

Anhows; congrats but learn to focus!
