DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

steve, i would try to find a way to explain all the simplicities of 24p to answer your post, but i cant seem to muster the energy. so  bluntly put, you dont seem to know what your talking about..  im not trying to start anything, just seriously cant explain the world of 24p each time someone who dosent understand it all. you should really rent the cam, id be suprised if we could pry it out of your hands afterwards :)

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

i have a pal DVX100, never saw any of these problems that you mention.

1. sound level is reasonable (and it's of course depends on what you're recording)

2. no delay in sound

3. the flickering issue.. now here i start to think that something is wrong with the new 100A.. we've always heard about this "problem", but recently it comes more often from new 100A users..
is it again someone who doesn't understand what progressive is all about, or are the first pieces of the A are really defected... ??? i wish someone could tell

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

No offense taken on that last post. To be honest, Im suprised you mustered up enough energy to respond at all. I guess I've come from the old School that if you don't have somthing nice or constructive to say...well...

John, I'm sure your right..there is probably some sort of solution out there. And Soren.. I do remeber the first Laser disk players having this ringing problem as well. This too could be an issue.

In reguard to your strobeing when panning thing chris..keep in mind when someone shoots film, they have to be concious of frame rate/ panning speed as well. Just pick up any ASC manual and they have a chart for optimal panning / frame rate. And just remember..your not the only one out there who's like "wait what's this strobe thing". A good friend of mine shot a short ( which won best short at Sundance) on the DVX100 and they found shooting in 30p best served them. They knew they would never make a print to film. And by the way.. they loved using thing camera.

John.. I haven't decided yet but I can tell you it won't be an XL1 :o

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

The DVX won another award at Sundance (I know, technically the filmaker did; but it was shot with the DVX?)

Nice!

And Steve, there is always the new Arri HD cam :o

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

That flick my friend shot was using the DVX100 in 30p mode. Now unfortunitly for my friend, he didn't get an award for camera but still a dang fine honer none the less.

Yea... the Arri HD...ah...But ya know, I'm also not rulling out the Pani SDX 900. Like I could afford either one. But the more I think about, the SDX 900 isn't all that bad in price considering what you get. The HD market is nice but I can see a trend towards non HD 24p like the SDX 900. In my travels, people don't want to spend the cash for a down conversion . They would much rather dump it right into thier laptops and go.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

my buddy just shot a feature on the SDX900 and it looks incredible. If you have the money then go for it.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Veganway,
Is the delay there when you play it back?

I'm a video newbie, but here's what I've noticed with my 100A. When monitoring a shoot with headphones in 'P' mode, the sound delay/echo is so bad I can't listen while watching someone speak. When I play the recording back, there's no problem whatsoever. Maybe it is off the the frame or two I've seen reported & discussed, but it's damn hard for me to notice it or get concerned. But when I'm monitoring while recording, it's awful.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

The audio delay while monitoring via headphones is a known issue.  I believe it was addressed over at 2-pop by the Panasonic rep.  This is due to the way the camera processes the 24P frames and audio signal.  When playing back the tape, your audio should be in sync.

Strobing?  What mode are you shooting in?  I find that shooting in 24PA the strobing appears worse on the LCD.  But once edited removing the Advanced pulldown with FCP, then outputing back to video with standard 3:2 pulldown, the image looks nice and smooth (albeit, with the normal 24fps look).  Outputing the standard 24PA image with the advanced pulldown does (in my opinion) look choppy.   I'll either shoot in 24PN (which uses standard 3:2 pulldown), or I'll use the method above before outputing to video.

A couple of other things...How does the video look on your NLE or on a different monitor? Also, are you using phantom (48v) power when connecting an external mic? Just thought I'd make sure...

Not sure if this helps or not, but thought I'd comment.  I realize that you're using a PAL camera and the pull down methods I mention are pretty much irrelevant. I just thought it might help for others (NTSC users in particular) that might be wondering about strobing. I have only had my camera less than a week, but have done some extensive testing of both acquisition, editing and output of the various modes.

For what it's worth,

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Hey, way too late to weigh in here, but there may be something to this PAL issue. Over on creativecow there was quite a spirited discussion. Seems that some combination of settings or whatnot is causing some ugly video, and it seems to be restricted to the PAL version. Search over at the DVX forum at creativecow.net, I think people may have made progress on this issue.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Sorry about the delay.

Ok, now I figure out I haven't said something very important, so far. I have my DVX100AE in camera mode, I set the scene file to F5 (25p, thick mode). I look in the viewfinder or in the LCD monitor...and I see that "doubling lines" "problem" (I put the word "problem" in brackets, as I'm getting confused...) already!!!!!! No need to see the shots on TV, the strange "effect" is visible through the camera, too... :o

Soren:

Anyways, I have tested the shots on a 100Hz TV and on another "normal" and smaller TV. Same prob. :'(

Shai:

>i have a pal DVX100, never saw any of these problems that >you mention.

I really don't know what to say!!! I went to this audio studio yesterday night....and guess what? This new sound engeneer put his headphones on while the camera was set to F1, so 25fps/50i....and he said: "what the hell!!! what's this horrible echo?".......If I'm mad, at least 6 people are mad, too as they all heard this echo in "normal" mode, too.

As far as audio levels are concerned....Shai, do you usually raise the volume if you have to record with the integrated mic (ok, I know it's not professional...but...)? Or is it just good set on mid position?

Steve/Andrew :

As you've just read, I can hear the echo/delay in normal mode, too....not only in 25p mode...in progressive it's just more delayed and more annoying, then.
Sync is fine in recorded shots.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Thanks Barry, I'm taking a look at the creativecow forum.

Andrew:

As far as external mics are concerned, I've just tried the Panasonic MC100 XLR one, so far. It uses 48v.

I'll check my NLE out and let you know. Actually, I've concentrated on TV output, so far.

I started to look for the volume problem on creativecow...and I'm happy to read I'm not alone...:

Subject: on-board mic audio concern

Does anyone know why the on-board mic volume is so low. I was just using it for some basic stuff and on playback you can hardly hear it. The volume is set to max(i think) I could not find any other options to increase volume level. Has anyone else seen this concern?
Also I am looking for a xlr adapter to go from a mini jack(azden wms pro)to the xlr of the 100a. I am looking for something small.

Are you listening to the camera speaker or did you hook it up to your tv or computer. The on camera speaker is not that loud, but you should have no problem hearing most things. When you are recording, make sure your audio levels are registering. IF they are then make sure you have the volume up on everything. YOu should really never have to turn the audio levels all the way up, it is a very sensitive mic.

Then, is the onboard mic sensitive or not?...My Panasonic technician said it's very weak.....

I'll go on with my research on creativecow...

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

I took a look at some clips I shot with the Panasonic through my NLE station (Canopus).

I see horizontal "lines" that "split" the image (sorry I don't know how to properly explain this...) in the PC monitor. You can see these "lines" when there's movement, especially on pans. *There's no difference* between 50i and 25p. On the small PAL Tv I have, I see normal image at 50i and that same old "problem" at 25p ("doubling lines").

I took a look at those two 25p videos you find at
http://homepage.mac.com/shailevy/camera/presentderbesuch.html
as IAL suggested. I noticed the same "horizontal lines" that "split" the image when there's movement, even if it seems like the "problem" is a little less present.

Is it normal to see clips coming from the DVX100 like this, on a PC monitor?

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

I do not see any of the problems you are referring to in Shai's trailer.

Can you be more specific in regards to Shai's trailer where you are seeing these "Pink Elephants" ?

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

John:

"I do not see any of the problems you are referring to in Shai's trailer."

Ok, now I really think I'm crazy.  >:( Seems like I'm alone to hear/see certain things. Call me Joan of Arc....  ::)

"Can you be more specific in regards to Shai's trailer where you are seeing these "Pink Elephants" ?"

Of course. Let's take "Zimmer" video for instance. I see these "splitted horizontal lines" in different part of the video. I've just showed the trailer to another person who's not even in the video field, and he says he can clearly see those lines. I'll give you the timecodes for the points where the lines are more visible/for longer time as the action is in fact longer:

00:00:16 to 00:00:18
00:00:38 to 00:00:40

...and: on the man's arm when he moves it quite at the beginning of the trailer, again on his arm and on the bottle when he's drinking, on the girl everytime she moves/goes off camera...

Now....maybe it's my PC?!!! So someone would think I have: a defective DVX100AE, a defective PC or monitor, and I tried a defective DVX100. Not bad...  :o

Is someone else seeing these damn lines?  >:(

Cris

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Are you referring to Shai's "Der BEsuch" Trailer with these timecode marks?

I watched it FULLSCREEN with Quicktime and I do not see even a hint of what you a referring to. Maybe it your settings? I do not know! Shai's trailer is stunning and I see none of the things you are seeing!

:( :-/

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

No, I was referring to this other trailer:

http://homepage.mac.com/shailevy/camera/presentzimmer.html

This is the trailer where the problem is more visible, because there's more movement. But I can see some lines in "Der Besuch" trailer, too...

I've just taken a look at the "5 nach 6" trailer (see link above) on a laptop...The lines are there... :'(

Speechless.

I am sorry to say:

I see NADA. Maybe you can send SHAI a PM asking ofr guidance on this? Maybe it's your laptop? Hell....

I dont know. Maybe its cause you don't eat meat? :D

I see nothing. No artifacts, no lines, nothing. Just Shais kick ass footage!

ON a good note, this should be solved soon!

"I see NADA. Maybe you can send SHAI a PM asking ofr guidance on this? Maybe it's your laptop? Hell...."

My PC *and* my laptop... ???

"I dont know. Maybe its cause you don't eat meat?"

Well...the other person who saw the trailer on both PC and laptop eats it......and he still sees the lines.... :P
Maybe is it meat that makes some people blind? :P (just kidding, no offence!! ;) )

"I see nothing. No artifacts, no lines, nothing. Just Shais kick ass footage!"

He surely did a gret job.

"ON a good note, this should be solved soon!"

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

I am feeling your pain! Perhaps Jdogg should have a DVXPAL thread?

I dont know what to say here. That sucks.

Re: DVX100AE flaws/problems (same as in DVX100)!

Thanks John... :-*

I'll check if Jdogg has this PAL thread...

A desperate Cris :'(
