DVX100AE firewire port problem?

Hi guys,

I've just received my new DVX100AE and while the picture quality is indeed stunning, my computer won't recognise it. I've tried 3 different computers (running either 2000 or XP) & 3 different firewire leads. All the computers recognise an older Canon XM1 so I can only assume its a problem with the new camera.

I know a few people have brought this up before but there never seemed to be any closure - did everyone who posted about this get replacement cameras, or it is something simple? Here's the email I got back from globalmediapro when I told them I thought the firewire port on the camera was faulty.

Very unlikely

This can be a problem of compatibility. DV interface is not well standardized. DVX100AE is new and may not be compatible with many existing cards/drivers. I would recommend you to search online forums for information on compatibility.

Please check that DV interface switched on and properly configured in camera settings. After that, to be sure it is not camera problem you can connect it to Panasonic or JVC modern vtr. If vtr can read it camera is
fine.

I don't have access to a vtr. Any suggestions?

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

try plugging into a different firewire port. For me, mine wouldn't recognize the camera on the front my G5 tower but when I plugged it in the back it saw the camera. The front one works because I plug my ipod up to that one. Not sure why it won't work for the DVX100.

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

Some of the early G5's were commonly diagnosed with faulty firewire ports. Just a tip-bit of info for you guys.

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

never experienced any problem in this regard..

I think it relates to ur camera...at least it is good u have detected it early.

I had this problem with a new dvx-100 , like you I tried every thing and I had to send it to The US where tey repaired it in a week... and I never got any explanation on what was happening..... Sorry. Jose

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

I had the same problem with my new 100A firewire port. Only ran three minutes of tape through it before I sent it off to be fixed. 0000 hours on the unit. Just got word today the part needed to fix it is back-ordered until AUGUST!!!!

C'mon Panasonic!!! How am I supposed to make money with a camera I can't use for almost 6 months???

My last full-time job I bought a Sony DVW-790WS Digibeta that one of my shooters dropped and cracked the case, and Sony pulled ALL the electronics out of it and put it in a new case AND got it back in under two weeks!

There is a problem with the grounding of Panasonic firewire ports, they just seem to be blaming it on the user's PC and "hot swapping", which I was under the impression is part of the IEEE-1394 spec. I've also got a DV2500 VTR being fixed that the firewire port quit working after 25 hours. It's funny, but my Canon GL1 (that is several years old) has NEVER given me a problem. My ADS Pyro drive also just keeps chugging along.

I have to move my gear quite a bit, since I work for several production companies as a free-lance editor and shooter, and I use several computers/editing systems. I can't make money if my gear is not reliable and overly delicate.

Other than my problems, I really like the camera and have recommended it to several other folks that have purchased them. Thank goodness I bought from a local authorized dealer so they can arrange for a loaner.

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

Hmm, seems like this is too common a problem. Hope Panasonic are taking note...

I'd only run 3 minutes of footage too when I found out, but we'll be shooting with it in a couple of weeks so I don't have time to wait for it to be repaired. David, I'm not sure what the rules in the US are, but here in the UK, if the item is under warranty and they can't repair it within 28 days, they have to provide a replacement camera.

Methinks I'll just shoot with it, transfer the footage with the old XM1 and send it off for repair when we're done. Lets just hope we don't need reshoots :P

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: DVX100AE firewire port problem?

UPDATE: Finally received my DVX100A back today. Firewire now works.

Hope Panasonic isn't as slow for everyone else on repairs. This has pretty much made me rule out an SDX-900 purchase in the near future.
