dvx100a vs vx2100 low-light, etc

Hello everyone. I'm at risk for repeating what might be a popular posting topic here, so my apologies in advance. Here's my situation. I'm looking to purchase a camcorder for under 3000 that would be ideal for documentary filmmaking. I'm in pre-production for a documentary, and I need an all-around, versatile, good in low-light situations camcorder. I'm less concerned with 24p capabilities, though I'd be inclined to buy the DVX if, and I think this is the standard measurement for low light, it performs well in '3000 lux'. What are some suggestions? I also understand HDV is a higher resolution, but it compresses to 25mbps, which confuses me, and is generally out of my price range. I'd appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks!

DVX KILLS IN LOW LIGHT! But the Canon 7d is around 3000 and you can shoot in next to no light.

If I am remembering right, the vx2100 was one of the best low light camcorders out there at the time. I think it was more sensitive then the DVX, but the DVX has many more advantages other then pure sensitivity.

I used to have a VX2000. Yes, the 2k and 2100 are better in low light, but like William said, the DVX is far superior in other ways. Better image control, real progressive recording (30p, 24p), and XLR audio. Another option could be a Sony PD170. It has 30/24p I believe, XLR audio and a bit more control over the image than the VX series. Also, for longer recording times and less chance of dropped frames, the PD170 has a DVCAM tape drive. I believe they can be found for around the same price of a DVX. However, I'd still definitely go for a DVX and just get a decent on camera light for it. I don't know if you have any other equipment right now but you will also need a good, sturdy fluid head tripod, a shotgun mic (unless you have a sound guy) and a case. If you find a package on ebay, most likely it will come with a case and maybe a mic and other accessories if you're lucky.

Comparing DVX 60i footage to VX 60i footage they are almost identical in picture quality. I remember reading that the DVX had a cleaner image with less noise
