DVX100A to iMovie '09

Unable to import video from DVX100A (VCR side) to MacBook Pro 2.66GHz (August 2009) using newest Snow Leopard OS and iMovie '09 v. 8.0.4 (807).

Cable is 4-pin DV from camera to 9-pin fire wire on MBP. Computer does not "see" the camera. Have done all the re-boot and re-start machinations to no avail. VTR camera menu is set for DV OUT -- ON.

On the advice of a Mac Genius (NYC 5th Ave Store) I purchased a G-Tek 500GB HD which has 2 each FW800 inputs. His theory: Connect the HD to the computer using one FW800 port and connect the camera to the other G-Tek HD FW800 port using the above mentioned cable. MBP sees the HD, but as to the camera/vtr -- NADA!

Unable to locate any postings on compatibility issues between iMovie '09 and DVX100A & at the same time, have been unable to locate anything that says it should work. Mac forums state that there should be no issues with iMovie '08, but there's nothing about '09.

What's the story here?

As always, thanks in advance, and yes, I know I should have shot this YouTube promo video for my wife's new book on a more modern format, but the HDX900 seemed a bit of overkill.

I have heard of problems with panasonic and snow leopard, but not the DVX... It could be possible that you blew out the firewire port on the camera. Try connecting the 100A directly to the MBP and then go up to the apple logo>about this mac>more info...>firewire. If should say something like either PANASONIC VTR or DVX100AP. If it isn't there, then you most likely blew out the FW port on the DVX. You could also try using a capture camera instead. I use a cheap Sony MiniDV to import.

An excellent suggestion, unfortunately, I was so focused on the MacBook problem, that I failed to mention that I had successfully connected the DVX via fire wire to an old PC and the camera was recognized.

I'm beginning to suspect that the never before used fire wire cable may be defective. As time permits this weekend, I will replace it and try one more time.

Actually now I remember that the reason I blew out my firewire port was because of a bad cable, so maybe try replacing it. Does the MBP still have the 6-pin firewire or is it the newer one now?

It's a new MBP & it has the 9-pin FW plug on the computer as well as on the external G-Tek drive. I'm going to J&R tomorrow morning to get another cable. I will let you know.

It was the new $20 cable that was defective. I purchased another today at J&R here in Manhattan and when I hooked the DVX100 to the MBP it was recognized. I also hooked the camera to the G-TEK HD (I wanted to save my digitized video to an external drive) the camera and drive were both recognized.
